Google Play Music update improves widget, adds features, fixes bugs

Google Play Music widget

Google Play Music has just received a notable update to add a few features that have been bugging users for some time now. Right off the top you'll spot a proper reverse button on the music widget, letting you go backwards in albums or playlists without entering the app. Instant mixes can now continue on past 25 tracks as well, and you can shuffle albums, artists or playlists. The default album art is changed to a simpler grey tile also.

When you pin albums or tracks, you can now see the progress of the download from that album or playlist view rather than just in the settings. There is also apparently a bugfix that should solve the problem of some Galaxy SIII (S3) devices freezing when using the app. It's a whole bunch of useful fixes and improvements, so go grab the update from the Play Store now.

Surprised Scientists Find Lifeforms Six Miles Above Earth's Surface

For the first time, scientists have found lifeforms where nobody thought it was possible: floating in the troposphere, the slice of the atmosphere approximately four to six miles (eight to 15 kilometers) above Earth's surface. And not just a tiny few, but lot: 20% of every particle in that atmospheric layer are living organisms. More »

Splashtop's Configurable Shortcuts & Gamepad feature lets tablet users create virtual controls and more

Configurable Shortcuts and Gamepad app lets Splashtop 2 users create virtual controls, more

Whether it be its iOS, Android or Windows 8 users, Splashtop does a pretty good job at keeping them happy by introducing new things here and there, and the very latest may be no exception to that -- well, at least to some. Dubbed Configurable Shortcuts & Gamepad, the feature will allow Splashtop 2 subscribers -- that are using an iPad or Android slate -- to easily create anything from a virtual gamepad, mouse controls and even keyboard shortcuts on a tablet's screen, which, according to the company, should make for a "faster and more seamless remote access with their Macs and PCs" while gaming or, you know, actually being productive. What's more, similar to what it did when other new services were brought to the mix, Splashtop's set to charge current subs a little extra in order to use the Configurable Shortcuts & Gamepad, with the add-on being priced at about $1 per month (on top of the Splashtop 2 monthly fee, of course). The feature's available now for anyone looking to try it out -- and if you'd like to see it in action before you make that in-app purchase, a video demo can be found just past the break.

The Worst Home Selling Mistakes To Prevent ? 3 Proven Methods ...

Unfortunately, unless you have some experience with placing homes on the market; you are the perfect candidate for failure. Given the wide range of sources for information regarding this subject; you have no reason to be unsuccessful. The information is readily available on the web and finding it is easy. When you decide to sell your house, you need to be prepared to take the task on and see it through. When you are aware of these valuable points, you will be able to keep from spending thousands. Below you will find some great tips on reaching the goals you have set for the sale of your home.

It?s fine to search the internet for real estate agents, and you?ll have no problems finding one. It is important to choose one near where you live if possible. You will usually find that local agents will be more helpful since they know the landscape in your area. It is vital, especially in regard to selling your home, that you realize this. Settling on the asking price involves knowledge of your market, or should at least. Not choosing the right price is something that could lead to your house becoming unlisted. Always remember this ? if your home drops from the listings, it will be harder to sell. Don?t let it drop!

We are providing you solid pieces of info here, but do be aware that some are more important to understanding home selling. However, the bottom line is how you want to make use of it, and how much of it will effect your situation. Yet you do understand there is much more to be discovered about this. Keep reading to discover even more, and what we will do is add a few more critical topics and recommendations for you to consider. Some of these tips really are critical to your comprehending, and there is even more going further than what is about to be covered.

Although you may believe this to be statistically incorrect, lower prices always come later. In regard to statistics, there are always exceptions to the rule. Once you understand this, you won?t be surprised later on. Anytime a house is actually a new listing, buyers will offer a higher bid to make sure that they can get it. Typically, the seller will turn down the initial bid, even if it is a good one, thinking higher bids will still come in. However, that is usually not the case and then things begin a downward spiral.

Samsung Patent Infringement of Apple iPhone 'Not Willful': Judge

Nonetheless, the world's largest device maker will still have to pay a hefty fine ($1 billion) for violating some Apple intellectual property.

Samsung celebrated a hard-fought legal victory Jan. 29 when a federal judge declared that the South Korean device maker's infringement of Apple iPhone design and utility patents was not a willful scheme. Nonetheless, the world's largest device maker will still have to pay a hefty fine for violating some Apple intellectual property. In a seven-page post-trial statement, San Jose, Calif.-based Judge Lucy Koh confirmed a $1 billion fine against Samsung for violating Apple's intellectual property while at the same time rejecting Apple?s bid for bonus damages in the months-long smartphone lawsuit. Apple had also sought court injunctions against Samsung against the sale of Samsung's 152 smartphones and tablets, including its popular Galaxy brand, in the United States. That request was denied by Koh in December. Back on Aug. 24, a federal court jury also presided over by Koh decided to punish Samsung with a $1.05 billion damages slap for ostensibly copying Apple's products. Koh's final decision found Samsung willfully in violation of seven of Apple?s design and utility patents. These covered the design of Apple's iPad and iPhone products, as well as essential user interface elements. One of the specific patents that jurors -- and Koh -- determined Samsung had copied from Apple is called the Bounce, which is what happens to content on the screen of any iOS device when a user scrolls down to the bottom of a page, and the page sort of "bounces" to let him or her know the end has been reached. Additionally, design items such as the curves on the edges of Samsung's smartphones and tablets were also cited as being "willfully" copied from Apple's products. Koh did not find that Apple infringed on Samsung?s intellectual property. Koh explained in her order that to constitute willful infringement, "Apple must prove by clear and convincing evidence that there was an ?objectively high likelihood that its actions constituted infringement of a valid patent.?? Koh decided that in each of the seven cases the violation was not willful. Back on Aug. 24, a federal court jury in San Jose, Calif. -- also presided over by Koh -- decided to punish South Korea-based Samsung with a $1.05 billion damages slap for ostensibly copying Apple's products. Apple made no qualms about going hard legally after Samsung, its Android operating system and the rest of the $219 billion smartphone and tablet market. It already owns about 62 percent of tablet sales with the iPad but it is facing a receding 17 percent of the smartphone market with the iPhone. Android, with 68 percent of the world smartphone market, has a huge advantage -- one that would take several years to supersede. Apple's main motivation for this case is that Android is kicking iPhone's rear all over the world. Android Inc. co-founder and Google Senior Vice President of Mobile and Digital Content Andy Rubin tweeted recently that more than 900,000 Android devices are activated each day.

Recipe: Pasta e Ceci | MNN - Mother Nature Network

Rustic Italian dishes like this one have very few ingredients but tons of flavor.

?

One of the things that I love about rustic Italian cooking is the simplicity of the ingredients and the robustness of flavors. My husband, son and I were in Italy this past November and we had some fantastic dishes, some of which had very few ingredients but tons of flavor. I've been obsessing a bit about Italian food since I got home, although I haven't really had the time to get out my pasta maker. Now that the holidays are past us, I'm going to make it a regular thing to do.

?

For those of you who would pass over this recipe because it has anchovies in it: don't. I don't like fish and my mother says I always spit it out as a baby. I keep trying and trying it, hoping that somehow I will finally like it, you know, the way you grow into flavors. Happily for my family I no longer spit it out, but I think it's safe to say that at my age, it's never going to taste good to me. However, anchovies have a way of melting into a sauce, adding a depth of flavor without actually making the dish fishy tasting. I have to say, I tasted the sauce half-way through cooking and I thought oh no! I should have added half the number of anchovies that the recipe calls for, but by the time it was all done, the sauce was delicious and I couldn't taste (or smell) the anchovies at all.

?

I think the next time I make this, I might mash the chickpeas a bit, so that they are more integral to the sauce, rather than just in it. Needless to say, in Toronto in the month of January there are no ripened tomatoes to be found, so I used some of my home canned tomatoes and they worked perfectly. This recipe is from the website Food52.

?

Prep time: 10 minutes?

Total time: 40 minutes?

Yield: 4 servings

?

Pasta e Ceci

Ingredients

  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 4 fillets anchovies
  • 4 ripe plum tomatoes
  • 3 healthy sprigs rosemary
  • Pinch salt and pepper
  • 1 can chickpeas
  • 4 cups chicken broth or water
  • Small dried pasta, like farfalle (for 4)
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • Grated parmesan

?

Cooking directions

  1. Dice garlic. Cut up anchovies, roughly chop tomatoes.
  2. Over medium heat, saute garlic, anchovies and two rosemary sprigs until the anchovies are melted.
  3. Add chopped tomatoes. Sautee 10 or 15 minutes, till the tomatoes are fully cooked. Salt as needed.
  4. Increase heat and add can of chickpeas, with water in the can, and a few cups of boiling water or heated chicken broth. Add last sprig of rosemary. Bring to soft boil.
  5. Add pasta. The liquid should just barely cover the pasta. Reduce heat to healthy simmer and cook till one minute less than the package recommends. Add water or broth if needed. But remember, the broth should be thick, so add the least amount of liquid possible that still allows the pasta to cook. When the pasta is done, spoon into bowls. Add grated parmesan, ground pepper and a few drops of good olive oil.

Norwegian Study: Global Warming Less Severe Than Feared

Numerous news outlets are reporting the findings of a study from the Research Council of Norway ? a government agency ? which concludes that (in Bloomberg's version) "After the planet's average surface temperature rose through the 1990s, the increase has almost leveled off at the level of 2000, while ocean water temperature has also stabilized." The New York Times' Dot Earth blog offers some reasons to be skeptical of the findings.

The dung beetle as celestial navigator

Only humans, birds, and seals are known to navigate using stars. But the dung beetle does use the Milky Way to chart its path, say scientists.

By Joseph Castro,?LiveScience.com / January 25, 2013

Dung beetles have been shown to use the Milky Way to navigate.Researchers have known for several years that the inch-long insects use the sun or moon as fixed points to ensure they keep rolling dung balls in a straight line - the quickest way of getting away from other beetles at the dung heap. Pictured here, a South African dung beetle.

Despite having tiny brains, dung beetles are surprisingly decent navigators, able to follow straight paths as they roll poo balls they've collected away from a dung source. But it seems the insects' abilities are more remarkable than previously believed. Like ancient seafarers, dung beetles can navigate using the starry sky and the glow from the Milky Way, new research shows.

"This is the first time where we see animals using the Milky Way for orientation," said lead researcher Marie Dacke, a biologist at Lund University in Sweden. "It's also the first time we see that insects can use the stars."

After locating a fresh pile of feces, dung beetles will often collect and roll away a large piece of spherical dung. Last year, Dacke and her colleagues discovered the beetles climb on their dung balls and dance around in circles before taking off. This dance is not one of joy, however; the insects are checking out the sky to get their bearings.

"The dorsal (upper) parts of the dung beetles' eyes are specialized to be able to analyze the direction of light polarization ? the direction that light vibrates in," Dacke told LiveScience. So when a beetle looks up, it's taking in the sun, the moon and the pattern of ambient polarized light. These celestial cues help the beetle avoid accidentally circling back to the poo pile, where other beetles may try to steal its food, Dacke said. [Photos of Dung Beetles Dancing on Poop Balls]

In addition to these cues, Dacke and her team wondered if dung beetles can use stars for navigation, just as birds, seals and humans do. After all, they reasoned, dung beetles can somehow keep straight on clear, moonless nights.

To find out, the researchers timed how long dung beetles of the species Scarabaeus satyrus took to cross a circular arena with high walls blocking views of treetops and other landmarks. They tested the insects in South Africa under a moonlit sky, a moonless sky and an overcast sky. In some trials, the beetles were fitted with cardboard caps, which kept their eyes to the ground. Overall, the beetles had a difficult time traveling straight and took significantly longer to cross the arena if caps or clouds obstructed their view of the sky.

McCain: Immigration plan to have pathway to citizenship

Two senators at the center of negotiations over comprehensive immigration reform, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) said on Sunday that a pathway to citizenship is an essential component of a comprehensive reform bill.

"That has to be also part of it," McCain told ABC News' Martha Raddatz on "This Week" when asked whether a pathway to citizenship would be a component of reform. "There's a new appreciation on both sides of the aisle including, maybe more importantly on the Republican side of the aisle, that we have to enact comprehensive immigration reform."

Like "This Week" on Facebook here. You can also follow the show on Twitter here.

McCain said that a small group of Senators will release the principles of a comprehensive, not "piecemeal," reform bill this week.

"I'm very pleased with the progress," McCain said. "It's not that much different from what we tried to do in 2007."

Read a full transcript of the interview with Sens. McCain and Menendez HERE.

Menendez, who met with President Obama on Friday along with other members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus leadership, said that the president expressed his full commitment to reform.

"The president made it very clear in that discussion that this was a top legislative priority for him in this session of the Congress and that he expects to work with all of us in an effort to achieve that goal and he's fully committed to it."

He added that a pathway to "earned legalization" is an "essential element" of an immigration reform bill.

"First, Americans support it in poll after poll. Secondly, Latino voters expect it. Thirdly Democrats want it. And fourth Republicans need it," Menendez said.

McCain added that he believes Obama's use of the presidential podium on behalf of immigration reform at an event in Las Vegas planned for Tuesday will aid efforts to pass a bill.

"I think it helps," McCain said. "I think its important that we all work together on this."

"Believe it or not, I see a glimmer of bipartisanship out there," he added.

CAIRO (AP) ? An Egyptian court sentenced 21 people to death Saturday on charges related to one of the world's deadliest incidents of soccer violence, touching off an attempted jailbreak and a riot that killed 16 in the Mediterranean port city that is home to most of the defendants.

The verdict follows deadly clashes between police and demonstrators on Friday, the second anniversary of the uprising that overthrew longtime leader Hosni Mubarak. Such cycles of violence, often lasting for weeks and costing dozens of lives, have occurred regularly over the past two years.

Die-hard soccer fans from both teams, known as Ultras, hold the police at least partially responsible for the Port Said deaths and criticize Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi for doing little to reform the force.

Al-Ahly Ultras in particular have been at the forefront of protests. But anger also is boiling in Port Said, where residents say they have been unfairly scapegoated.

Immediately after the verdict, two police were shot dead outside Port Said's main prison when angry relatives tried to storm the facility to free the defendants. Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets, as well as live rounds, at the crowd outside the prison, killing 14, security officials said. Hundreds were wounded. They spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Security officials said the military is being deployed to Port Said ? the second such deployment in less than 24 hours. The army was widely used to keep order by top generals who took over after Mubarak, but the military has kept a much lower profile since Morsi was elected as president in June.

Morsi cancelled a scheduled trip to Ethiopia Saturday and instead met for the first time with top generals as part of the newly-formed National Defense Council.

The military was also deployed overnight in the city of Suez after eight people died in clashes between security forces and protesters opposed to Morsi. Another protester was killed in Ismailiya, and security officials told the state news agency MENA that two policemen were killed in Friday's protests, bringing the death toll on the second anniversary of Egypt's uprising to 11.

Judge Sobhi Abdel-Maguid read out the death sentences related to the Feb. 1 riot in Port Said that killed 74 fans of the Cairo-based Al-Ahly team. Defendants' lawyers said all those sentenced were fans of the Port Said team, Al-Masry. Executions in Egypt are usually carried out by hanging.

The judge Saturday said in his statement read live on state TV that he would announce the verdict for the remaining 52 defendants on March 9.

Among those on trial are nine security officials, but none were handed sentences Saturday, lawyers and security officials say.

Fans of al-Ahly, whose stands were attacked by rival club Al-Masry in the Feb. 1 incident in Port Said, had promised more violence if the accused did not receive death sentences. In the days leading up to the verdict, Al-Ahly fans warned of bloodshed and "retribution". Hundreds of Al-Ahly fans gathered outside the Cairo sports club in anticipation of the verdict, chanting against the police and the government.

Before the judge could read out the names of the 21, families erupted in screams of "Allahu Akbar!" Arabic for God is great, with their hands in the air and waving pictures of the deceased. One man fainted while others hugged one another. The judge smacked the bench several times to try and contain reaction in the courtroom.

"This was necessary," said Nour al-Sabah, whose 17 year-old son Ahmed Zakaria died in the melee. "Now I want to see the guys when they are executed with my own eyes, just as they saw the murder of my son."

The verdict is not expected to calm tensions between the two rival teams. The judge is expected to make public his reasons for the death sentences March 9, when the remaining 52 defendants receive their sentences.

A Port Said resident and lawyer of one of the defendants given a death sentence said the verdict was nothing more than "a political decision to calm the public."

"There is nothing to say these people did anything and we don't understand what this verdict is based on," Mohammed al-Daw told The Associated Press by telephone.

"Our situation in Port Said is very grave because kids were taken from their homes for wearing green T-shirts," he said, referring to the Al-Masry team color.

The violence began after the Port Said's home team won the match, 3-1. Al-Masry fans stormed the pitch after the game ended, attacking Cairo's Al-Ahly fans.

Authorities shut off the stadium lights, plunging it into darkness. In the exit corridor, the fleeing crowd pressed against a chained gate until it broke open. Many were crushed under the crowd of people trying to flee.

Survivors of the riot described a nightmarish scene in the stadium. Police stood by doing nothing, they said, as fans of Al-Masry attacked supporters of the top Cairo club stabbing them and throwing them off bleachers.

Al-Ahly survivors said supporters of Al-Masry carved the words "Port Said" into their bodies and undressed them while beating them with iron bars.

While there has long been bad blood between the two rival teams, many blamed police for failing to perform usual searches for weapons at the stadium.

Both Al-Ahly Ultras and Al-Masry Ultras widely believe that ex-members of the ousted regime of Hosni Mubarak helped instigate the attack, and that the police at the very least were responsible for gross negligence. It is not clear what kind of evidence, if any, was presented to the court to back up claims that the attack had been orchestrated by regime officials.

"The police are thugs!" yelled relatives of the deceased inside the courtroom before the judge took the bench.

As is customary in Egypt, the death sentences will be sent to the nation's top religious authority, the Grand Mufti, for approval, though the court has final say on the matter.

All of the defendants ? who were not present in the courtroom Saturday for security reasons ? have the right to appeal the verdict.

The melee was the world's deadliest soccer violence in 15 years.

The Ultras are proud of their hatred for the police, who were the backbone of Mubarak's authoritarian rule. They then then directed their chants against the military rulers who took over after Mubarak's ouster.

Ultras from several Egyptian sports clubs were engaged in deadly clashes with police near the Interior Ministry headquarters in Cairo that killed 42 people less than three months before the soccer melee in Port Said.

    Quick answer to:
    http://forum.renoise...919#entry287919

-Right click in the instrument area.
    -Select "Save All Samples as..."
You will get a dialog to define your first location, once set, it won't ask you any more (unless you click the browse button).
-Either pick wav or flac and then click save.

If an instrument has samples, it will save them into a folder named after the instrument.

    Whoops, first edit already required...
The renaming schedule was broken if the same sample filename already existed...

    V1.1 is available...
Decided to also use the idle notifier. (Renoise was quite often nagging the script turn unresponsive)
The status bar now shows some form of progress while exporting.

Green Blog: Court Faults E.P.A.'s Biofuels Mandate

A federal appeals court has thrown out part of the Environmental Protection Agency?s biofuels mandate, saying that it was based on a wishful assessment of how much cellulosic fuel could be produced.

So far, producers have had a hard time generating the volume that would be needed to meet the cellulosic fuel quota set for refiners, which is part of an effort by the Obama administration to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Cellulosic fuel is generated from agricultural waste and even household garbage through a process using bacteria, catalysts and the digestive juices of microorganisms.

The text of the ruling is here.

WATCH: Osborne - not for turning on the economy

Today 1) Growth figures to be released.? And Osborne's not for turning as he snubs IMF plea to ease austerity...

Osborne as Thatcher"The Chancellor insisted he will plough ahead with spending cuts until 2017. The IMF?s chief economist Olivier Blanchard had called for the UK to slow down its austerity programme. But speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Mr Osborne said: ?I don?t think it is right to abandon a credible deficit plan.?? ?We do have to carry on with the cuts,? he said. ?We?re not about to bring that programme to an end. It will go on until 2017. We are walking a difficult road but we are going in the right direction.? - Daily Express

...But the Curse of Clegg strikes again as LibDem leader agonises over Coalition policy in haplessly-timed House Magazine interview

"Mistakes have been made over the economy by the Coalition, Deputy PM Nick Clegg dramatically said last night. He risked a huge row with Chancellor George Osborne by admitting the Government should have spent MORE on big building projects to boost jobs. The Lib Dem leader?s startling honesty is terrible timing for the Treasury as it braces itself for a fresh dose of grim tidings today" - The Sun

Today 2) Same-sex marriage bill to be published.? "The most divisive vote of Cameron's leadership."

Gay Tory logo"The issue threatens to shatter the Tory unity that Mr Cameron engendered with his Europe speech this week. MPs have warned party whips that the issue of gay marriage is by far the most toxic for them among grassroots party members. The Times has spoken this week to MPs from all parts of the country, all of whom have reported that local association members are deserting the party over the issue. Opposition to gay marriage had dominated their postbags and was driving members to UKIP, the MPs said." - The Times (?)

Today 3) Ruth Davidson to distance Scottish Tories from English party

Ruth Davidson"She will say the Conservatives are unfairly characterised as controlled by Westminster, and they need to prove to voters ?beyond all reasonable doubt? they put Scotland first. Although many people north of the Border continue to share Tory values, she will argue the party?s hostile attitude to devolution has meant they are perceived as ?a brake on the aspirations of Scotland and not a torch bearer?. Senior sources close to Ms Davidson said she had not yet decided to cross the constitutional ?line in the sand? she promised to draw during her successful leadership campaign in 2011." - Daily Telegraph

No early poll bounce for Cameron's EU speech

"The first YouGov poll since the Prime Minister's speech, the?fieldwork for which was conducted between 5pm on Tuesday and 5pm yesterday, shows no sign of an early boost for the Tories. Instead, support for Labour has risen by two points to 43 per cent, while the Tories are unchanged on 31 per cent. We will, of course, need to wait until the weekend polls for a clear picture of what effect, if any, Cameron's speech has had on the Conservatives' standing." - The New Statesman

The Prime Minister meets Merkel in Davos.? She doesn't mention his speech during hers...

    Cameron and merkel
"Cameron held a 20-minute meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel to discuss his plan to negotiate a new deal for Britain. She had indicated a ?fair compromise? could be possible to allow the UK to loosen ties. He also met other EU premiers including Italy?s Mario Monti and Enda Kenny of Ireland. Mr Cameron made a passionate defence of his referendum plan in a speech to the Forum. He said: ?This is not about turning our backs on Europe ? quite the opposite." - Daily Express

...But Clegg suggests EU referendum wouldn't hold up a second Coalition...

"Nick Clegg, Britain?s deputy prime minister, said Mr Cameron?s proposals for a renegotiation were ?vague? and it was ?wholly implausible? that a future Conservative government could rewrite the rules to the sole advantage of the UK. However the pro-European Liberal Democrat leader did not rule out the possibility that he would back Mr Cameron?s call for an in-out referendum, if the 2015 general election propels his party back into a second coalition with Mr Cameron?s Tories." - Financial Times (?)

Paul Goodman: Cameron's speech was a gamble to get the Euro-sceptic monkey off his back

"So why has this cautious politician, naturally restrained in temperament and outlook, taken such an extraordinary gamble, risking the very unity and future of his party?
