Brother ImageCenter ADS-2000

Although Brother has a long history of building scanners into its multifunction printers, the ImageCenter ADS-2000 is the company's first foray into the desktop single-function scanner arena. It offers good OCR capabilities and some nifty features?such as the ability to scan to USB thumb drives? for a scanner in its price range. In our testing, it proved somewhat sluggish, particularly at default scan settings, for its rated speed.

The ADS-2000 is a duplex scanner with a 50-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF). It measures 11.8 by 8.7 inches (WD) when closed, and weighs 7.7 pounds. It has a straight-through paper path from the ADF into the output tray. It supports the scanning of business cards as well as plastic cards.

As is the case with most document scanners, the ADS-2000's optical resolution is up to 600 ppi. The default resolution for scanning to file (PDF) is 300 ppi, which should be more than enough for most business documents.

An uncommon feature of the ADS-2000 is the ability to scan to USB keys, as well as to Android phones (though only over a cable). Other interesting features are 2-in-1 scanning (stitching 2 documents together into a ledger-sized scanned document) and continuous scanning (the ability to scan documents longer than the ADF's 50-page maximum).

It also has multi-feed detection, for catching when more than one page is fed through the scanner at once and stopping the scan so you can re-feed the unscanned sheet(s). This is a good thing to have, especially as in my testing the scanner had a relatively high number of misfeeds?I had to scuttle several test runs because of them.

Software
Software bundled with the ADS-2000 includes Brother's Control Center 4 scan utility; Nuance Paper Port 12SE (for Windows) and Presto! PageManager 9 (for Mac) for document management and optical character recognition (OCR); Presto! BizCard 5; and Nuance PDF Converter Professional 7 (for Windows), which lets you create, edit, search, and collaborate on PDF files, and send them to Cloud-based services. It also has Twain and ISIS drivers, which let you scan from virtually any program that has a scan command. All of the programs are installed automatically during setup except BizCard and Nuance PDF converter, which although they're on the same disc as the other programs, you have to select and install them separately.

The Control Center scan utility is a simple and quite useful interface, with buttons for 4 scan destinations: Scan to Image (300 ppi JPEG); OCR (300 ppi .txt file), Email (200 ppi PDF); and File (300 ppi PDF). By right-clicking on any of the buttons, you can change the settings, such as resolution, scan type (auto black and white, gray (error diffusion), true gray, or 24-bit color), document size, simplex/duplex, and set brightness and contrast.

You can also initiate scans from Nuance PaperPort (or Presto! PageManager if you use the scanner with a Mac), which lets you scan to multiple destinations, displayed at the bottom of the screen with icons. The Twain and ISIS drivers let you scan to nearly any program that has a scan command. ?

Speed and Document Management
The ADS-2000 is rated at up to 24 pages per minute (ppm) for simplex (one-sided) scanning and 24 ppm/48 images per minute (ipm) for duplex scanning, in which each side of a two-sided document counts as one image. In my testing, using the scan utility's default settings to scan to file (color image PDF at 300 ppi), it averaged 1 minute 22 seconds or 18.4 ppm, to scan and save a 25-page file, a bit under its rated speed. For duplex scanning, its tested speed fell to 12.2 ppm or 24.4 ipm. In scanning to searchable PDF format, the ADS-2000 scanned our test document in simplex at 12.9 ppm; for duplex, it slowed to 8.8 ppm/17.6 ipm. I also scanned the test document to a text file using the scan utility's OCR button; it did so at 13 ppm.

We do our official timings using default settings, as we've found that users tend to stick to them. But I also tried scanning the same document to image PDF at 200 ppi; the ADS-2000 turned in a similar 18.7 ppm simplex speed but a faster 18.7 ppm/37.4 ppm for duplex scanning, losing no time in scanning two-sided sheets. For searchable PDFs, it scanned at the same speed as at 300 ppi (12.9 ppm), but in duplex scanning it was a bit faster (14.1 ppm/28.2 ipm) than at the default resolution, and even a tad faster than its simplex scanning speed.

The bottom line is that although simplex scanning speeds were much the same at either 200 or 300 ppi, you may gain a little speed in duplex scanning by switching to 200 ppi. This comes at the expense of resolution, though there wasn't any obvious degradation in quality at 200 ppi in the PDFs I examined. (The higher resolution is more important with older or faded documents.) Curiously, when I tried scanning to black-and-white as well as grayscale PDFs (both image and searchable), these scans actually took longer than scanning to color.

I timed my scans from when I hit the scan button until the saved PDF of the scan showed up in its folder in Windows Explorer. However, I noticed that on occasion?particularly when scanning in duplex?the scanner would take additional time in "processing" (so the on-screen message said) before it was ready to scan another document. This could be an issue for people scanning multiple two-sided or multi-page documents.

We clocked the Editors' Choice Canon ImageFormula DR-C125, rated at 25 ppm/50 ipm, at 25.4 ppm and 50 ipm for simplex and duplex scanning, respectively, to image PDF, true to its rated speed. Impressively, it maintained the same speeds when scanning to searchable PDF. I recently timed the Plustek SmartOffice PS286 Plus, rated at 25 ppm for simplex and 50 ipm for duplex scanning, at 23 ppm and 37.2 ipm for simplex and duplex respectively, when scanning to image PDF, and at 13 ppm in scanning in simplex to searchable PDF.

The ADS-2000 did well at OCR, reading our Arial and Times New Roman text documents perfectly down to 8-point type. For business card management with BizCard 5, it did a reasonable job, entering data in the correct fields without an error on about half my test cards, and on most of the others had no more than two or three errors.

The Brother ADS-2000 is a good addition to Brother's repertoire as the company's first single-function desktop scanner? It has incorporated scanners into its multifunction printers for many years, and in the past two years has introduced portable scanners such as the Brother DS-700D ($200 street, 2.5 stars). The ADS-2000 has a good feature set for a moderately priced desktop scanner?many more expensive units can't scan to USB thumb drives?and it did well in our OCR testing. It is somewhat sluggish for its rated speed, particularly at default scan settings, and even took some extra processing time after some scans were saved to file before it was ready to initiate a new scan. The Editors' Choice Canon imageFormula DR-C125 not only matched its rated speed for both simplex and duplex scanning, it lost no time in scanning to searchable PDF.

Support for Former Basketball Coach Grows

August 31, 2012 Updated Aug 31, 2012 at 5:06 PM EDT

Williamsville, NY (WKBW) - Close to a thousand people have joined a Facebook page to support former Williamsville Basketball Coach Al Monaco. Many who've joined the page describe Monaco as a mentor and don't understand why this accomplished coach was let go from his position.

Al Monaco has coached the Williamsville South High School Basketball Team for the past 24 season and lead his team to sectional championships back in 2010 and 2011. Last week though, his coaching career in the district was over after student harassment complaints were filed against him.

"This is a personnel matter. We take it very seriously. It's very unfortunate that it's come to this, but unfortunately we are going to go in a different direction with our basketball coach at South High School," said Williamsville School District Superintendent Scott Martzloff.

Amherst police investigated the complaints from some parents of players who said Monaco verbally harassed their children, however no chargers were filed.

South Florida 4th Annual Jamaica High School Alumni Soccer & Netball Tournament

LAUDERHILL ? Scores of Jamaica?s high school alumni and sports enthusiasts will make way to the Lauderhill Sports Complex for the exciting South Florida 4th Annual Jamaica High School Alumni Soccer and Netball Tournament this Labor Day Weekend. The Sports Complex, located at 7500 West Oakland Park Boulevard, Lauderhill, Florida 33319, will roar to life on Sunday, September 2nd at 10am through 6pm and again on Monday September 3rd from 10am through 9pm.

The tournament is expected to be bigger and better than last year?s staging as twenty-four teams compete to win the National Weekly Championship Trophy and a cash prize. The champions also win the honor of giving back to their high schools in Jamaica as they also win a donation of sporting equipment for their Alma Mater.

?I think JHSASN have started a wonderful thing in hosting this alumni soccer tournament, which in turn benefits the Alma Mater of the winning team. This is a very good idea and I hope more alumni will get involved so we can, through JHSASN, be able to give back more to our Jamaican schools in an attempt to affect the lives of our current and future students for many more years,? says Ms. Rosemary Boothe, Treasurer, St Mary High School Alumni Association, South Florida Chapter, and 2011 defending champions.

We encourage all past students to come wearing their school colors and participate in the festivities as we introduce the Jamaica High School Alumni Sporting Network (JHSASN) Alumni Village. Just Save Money! That Should Be Your Motto When Using These Auto

If you plan on driving a car, plan on getting auto insurance. However, you need to know what kind and how much coverage you need. It can be hard to choose because you have so many options. This process does not have to be so hard. The following tips will help you determine the basics and better understand your auto insurance options.

Replace your high-performance car with a simpler, less costly one. Although fast and furious sports cars are impressive, they also cost a premium to insure. Family-friendly cars tend to be the cheapest to insure. A larger engine also generally comes with higher insurance costs. Sports cars are targets of theft, therefore the insurance will cost more.

Research the different types of coverage available, and check to determine whether or not your coverage covers all possibilities. Liability insurance covers your car's repairs in the event of an accident as well as the repairs for the other person involved. It also covers medical payments should hospitalization be necessary. Insurance against uninsured drivers, as well as non-accident damage to your car like fire or flood, is also important.

In the event of a crash, you can save yourself a great deal of time and money by properly insuring your car. The company has the customer pay a predetermined amount, called a deductible, and any costs above that amount are covered by the insurers.

Many times auto insurance companies offer discounts, and customer rewards. There are various discounts such as the one for drivers who do not drive more than 7,500 miles in a year. Your premium will also be reduced if you take any public transit system to work. Try carpooling if you can't do that.

One thing that many people overlook when reviewinging car insurance is that they may not be covered for other "uninsured" drivers. As this potential gap in coverage will increase your bill in the event of an accident involving an uninsured driver, it is important to carefully investigate this aspect of your insurance plan. This will protect your interests in case you are hit by someone without insurance.

The more drivers you have listed for a vehicle, the higher your premiums will be. This is why it's important to remove drivers that do not need to be listed on the policy. By removing a person off of your policy that does not drive your car, you will be able to lower your premium. Since driver under 25 pay higher rates, you can lower your monthly insurance premium by removing young drivers from your policy.

Make sure to research insurance costs when you are purchasing a car. Your agent will be able to provide you with the information that details which vehicles have the best insurance rates. Whether you are looking at new or used cars, you can make a much better decision if you take insurance rates into account. By purchasing a car that has a good safety rating, you can save a lot on your car insurance.

If you have car insurance, you should have a good driving record. Nothing will increase your rates, as quickly as a car accident. You need to be aware of your own limitations. Knowing this can help you avoid situations in which you are at greater risk. If you have a hard time seeing at night, you shouldn't drive during this time.

These are just some starter tips for getting to know about auto insurance. As you learn more about insurance, it becomes easier to understand. You are also in a better situation to choose the best coverage for your needs.

Don't allow an issue with your automobile devastate your holiday. Before you travel, visit AAA Car Care store to fix any outstanding issues.

First graduating class creating chemistry for University of Rio Grande

by Staff Report
mdtnews@mydailytribune.com
Pomeroy Daily Sentinel

RIO GRANDE ? The Chemistry Department at the University of Rio Grande is preparing for a first ? a graduating class of chemistry majors from a program created three years ago.

?Being part of the first graduating class didn?t mean much to me then. It does now,? Sheri Marcum, a senior said. ?I really had a lot of doubt about whether or not I could do this.?

Like the experiments students must conduct in their classes, the process of creating and delivering a new major uncovered the unexpected.

?I think students underestimate the power they have to impact a program,? said Jacob White, Ph.D., associate professor of chemistry. ?They?ve each contributed to the program in their own way. There is always that opportunity at Rio.?

An unexpected turn

Dr. White said when the Chemistry Department decided to offer a major, the plan was simple: sophomores use research templates; juniors meet in the middle in a ?bridge? format; and seniors do original research.

The Provost?s Academic Excellence Initiative at Rio changed that plan. The grant affords student funding to work on special projects with their professors. In this case, the Chemistry Department leaders decided that the students would complete an experiment and present at the Ohio Academy of Science Annual Meeting. Nobody from the Rio Chemistry Department had ever presented at this prestigious meeting before.

?This peer review process is pretty intense,? John Means, Ph.D., assistant professor of chemistry, explained. ?The students were put through the ringer.?

In order to present at the Ohio Academy of Science Annual Meeting, students must provide original research. One year ahead of schedule, the junior chemistry majors were challenged beyond their expectations and would have to deal with a change in plans.

?The students dove into the deep-end of the original research pool,? Dr. White said.

A calming force

Marcum is used to stress.

?My children are older than my classmates,? she said when talking about her age.

For years, Marcum worked as a lab technician and although she was doing higher-level work could not receive a promotion without a four-year degree.

?I like a good challenge, and if you want a good challenge, further your education,? she said.

So Marcum enrolled at Rio majoring in chemistry. At one point, Marcum worked overnight, took a nap in the morning and went to class in the middle of the day. White and Means both said Marcum?s professional experience helped guide the entire department through the research and experimentation phase of their proposals. But Marcum just saw this as another day?s work.

?In the lab, it?s feast or famine,? she said.

A thorough review

Marcum said each student created an individual presentation, but all of her classmates offered a helping hand. After a peer review, all four abstracts received an invitation to present at the Ohio Academy of Science Annual Meeting.

?Pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone and being equal to others from different universities, it was a great sense of pride that you met the challenge,? Marcum said.

Not only was this the first time anyone from the Rio Chemistry Program presented in front of this statewide audience, they had just seven weeks to prepare when other universities had the entire academic year.

?We are extremely proud of these students,? Means said. ?Things changed on the fly for them and they adapted quickly.?

A bright future

Experiments don?t always go as planned and, as he looks to the future, White says his biggest challenge is trying to find a way to top last year?s success.

?It was even more of a transformative experience than we had hoped for,? he said. ?We could see the students? confidence levels increase tremendously. That?s a gratifying experience.?

So, too, will watching the four students who walked into class three years ago experience one final year together. In May 2013, they will become the first graduating class of the newly redesigned Chemistry Program at the University of Rio Grande.

?Many think chemistry is unattainable if you?re out of school for a certain time, but the main thing is you have to be willing to work hard,? Means said. ?If you set your mind to it and have the desire to work hard, it?s quite attainable.?

?Furthering your education pays for itself in the long run,? Marcum agreed. ?By far.?

Can drug coverage erase the income gap in diabetes?

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) ? Universal drug coverage might help partly close the gap between the rich and the poor when it comes to diabetes complications, a new Canadian study suggests.

Researchers found that much of the income gap in heart risks among diabetic adults disappeared after the age of 65 ? the age at which universal drug coverage kicks in for Canadians.

Canada has universal healthcare, but when it comes to medications, people younger than 65 either pay out-of-pocket or have private drug coverage through work ? similar to Americans their age.

In the new study of more than 600,000 Ontario residents with diabetes, researchers found that lower-income people had higher risks of heart attack, stroke and death. But the disparity largely disappeared after age 65.

The findings, reported in the journal Diabetes Care, do not prove that universal drug coverage erased the income gap.

But there is no other obvious factor that would explain the ?sudden shift? at age 65, said lead researcher Dr. Gillian L. Booth, of the University of Toronto and St. Michael?s Hospital in Ontario.

?This also fits in with what?s been seen in other studies,? Booth said in an interview.

Research has shown that a growing number of people with diabetes cannot afford their medications ? which include not only drugs to control blood sugar, but also those for high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other problems that commonly go hand-in-hand with diabetes.

Another study in Ontario also found a widening gap in death rates between the rich and poor with diabetes ? but the trend is mainly among people younger than 65.

?I feel confident that expanding drug coverage could help save some lives,? Booth said.

Her team?s findings are based on health records for 606,051 Ontario adults who were followed over six years. During that time, over 48,000 of those people were hospitalized for a heart attack or stroke, and just over 111,000 died of any cause.

Booth?s team found that among people younger than 65, those in the bottom 20 percent for income had a higher rate of heart attack, stroke and death: just over two percent per year, versus 1.4 percent among the wealthiest 20 percent.

Even when the researchers considered certain other factors ? like people?s history of heart problems before the study ? low income was still linked to a 51 percent higher risk.

But when the researchers looked at older adults, the gap between the rich and poor was much smaller: the lowest-income group had a 12-percent higher risk of heart attack, stroke or death than the most affluent group.

Even though Booth thinks universal drug coverage helps explains the findings, she said it is not the sole reason for the gap between the rich and poor.

?It?s more complicated than that,? Booth said. Diabetes is a complex condition that requires people to keep up a healthy lifestyle, and tackle daily tasks like measuring blood sugar.

So differences in diet, exercise, smoking and general ?health literacy? ? a person?s ability to read and understand information about a health condition ? are all important, according to Booth.

?Drug coverage is one piece,? she said. ?We think it?s an important piece, but it?s not the only one.?

Booth also said she thinks her findings are relevant to other countries, including the U.S., where the Medicare program for older Americans has covered the cost of prescriptions since 2006.

Studies have shown that since that benefit started, Medicare recipients? adherence to their medications has generally improved. That includes the poorest and sickest beneficiaries.

Those studies have also found that ?non-drug? spending ? mostly for hospitalizations ? has declined among Medicare recipients who previously had only limited drug coverage.

Medicare drug coverage is subject to coverage gaps, in which seniors have to pay full price for their prescriptions. Recent studies have found that participants often drop their medications when they hit that so-called ?donut hole? in coverage, but have not documented any health consequences from that choice. Still, Booth said the overall evidence argues for better drug coverage for younger people as well. ?More and more people are being diagnosed with diabetes at younger ages,? she noted.

Older age is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes, by far the most common form of diabetes. But so is obesity. And in the U.S., about 36 percent of all adults are now obese.

An estimated 26 million Americans have diabetes, including 14 percent of all people between the ages of 45 and 64, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
