Internet Marketing ? Should You Build An Email List? | The Web ...

By Lane, on August 20th, 2012

When I first started online, I didn?t know anything about building a list. I didn?t really understand or appreciate the importance of doing so. All I knew was I wanted to build a website, so I went to a local book store and purchased a book all about HTML. I read the entire book and then, because the book made no reference to site-builders, I wrote the whole thing from scratch using notepad. Although I was proud of this achievement, numbers don?t lie and my first website didn?t make a great deal of money, neither did I attempt to build a list with it, simply because I didn?t know any better.

My second website fared a lot better, because by that stage I had found a nice looking template and I was marketing the main product a whole lot better. In fact I did such a nice job that I began to generate sales from it. Now if I could go back in time and be visited by the future me, like in the film ?Back to the Future?, as far as internet marketing goes I would tell myself to start building a list today. Not in a month, two weeks or even tomorrow, but today. You see, as far as I am concerned, building an email marketing list is one of the top priorities for your online business, if not the top priority.

Now some people reading this article right now will have something of a lightbulb moment and realize that this is something they should begin doing right away. Others will say it sounds like a good idea and think about getting around to doing it at some point in the future. There will also be people convinced they don?t need to build a list because they just want to focus on building a website. Let me tell you right here and now, that those people are leaving money on the table, so if you fall into this category I urge you to re-think your strategy as it is most likely flawed.

In most niches it makes sense to build an email marketing list. There will be some niches that don?t lend themselves so readily to building a list, but if you?re in a popular niche such as weight loss, dating or internet marketing, then by not building a list you are missing out on the best way of building a relationship with your audience. Also, a lot of people who visit your website will see it once and never return again. When this happens you have most likely lost them forever.

The bottom line here is that if you want to develop a strong relationship with people in your market, you should be building a list. If you want to make more money online and have the ability to engage with your audience fast, you need to stop what you are doing right now and begin building a high quality list of subscribers on a priority basis.

Have You Considered Alternative Allergy Testing? - Critical Care 2011

An alternative to conventional methods of testing for allergies is vega allergy testing.

Small samples of possible allergens are tested simply by using a mild electrical circuit, a form of modified electroacupuncture utilizing a Vega machine. It?s completely non-invasive and is founded on the idea of ?energetic pathology?.

Substances including food, drink and environmental substances for example?dust mites?are tested during the consultation with a bio-electronic analyzer which measures your body?s electrical resistance to these substances. The kit consists of a box containing a galvanometer which compares the resistance between the skin in contact with a hand electrode and the skin tested with a measuring stylus. There is also?an electrical?source in the box.?

If a substance is causing a problem then there will be a dip within the body?s electrical resistance. The equipment records any alteration of skin conductivity after the application of a small voltage. Homoeopathic extracts are put into the electrical loop, and therefore the source of an abnormal response is localised.

Every toxin within the body has a special constant frequency while physiological signals fluctuate in a specific range of frequencies. Vega testing claims to read these changes.?However, the Vega machine is only about 70% accurate, so it needs to be used together with other allergy tests.

There is certainly a great deal of controversy over its reliability and criticism that accuracy depends upon the practitioner accuracy.

If you have?a dust mite allergy,?dust mite control?is essential. Similarly, if you are allergic to pet hair, get rid of the cause, decrease the risk and the symptoms.

In a thorough allergy?natural treatment?strategy,?dust mite bedding?prevents exposure to house dust mites while your children and family sleep.?

Cover mattresses with specifically designed and made?dust mite covers, providing welcome relief from dust mite allergy symptoms like coughing and runny nose.

Vega allergy testing may assist as a basis to determine what triggers are present in some cases but seeing your health professional?may be better for some individuals.

List Building is the Key to Internet Marketing Success | Success ...

In internet marketing the essence or key to success is the list building, namely your list. You may have heard the same thing expressed by the now infamous saying, ?The money is in the list.? Well, put that on your list of truths about internet marketing.

Suppose that you are involved with internet marketing and you have just developed a new product. Going a step further let?s say you are working with the sub niche of affiliate marketing and your new product is an affiliate program that you want to promote and that you want affiliates to promote.

How are you going to do that? The only way you can promote it is to tell someone about your new affiliate product. That someone is your list. There are all kinds of lists that you can use. Let?s take a look at a few of them.

1. Affiliate List.

In the case referenced above, you would likely turn to your list of affiliates first, if you have any. That is, people who have joined your affiliate program and promoted some of your affiliate products before. A benefit here is that they in turn have lists of their own that they can promote your affiliate product to. So you benefit from their list as well.

2. Joint Venture (JV) list

Another list is what is called a Joint Venture (JV) list. Giveaways are currently strong in this area. You will see a lot of advertising that says something like, ?A new JV program is launching.? In all likelihood, it will be a giveaway promotion.

The idea in this type of list building is to leverage off of the lists of others to build your own list. Each JV partner that joins the giveaway has a list also. He advertises the giveaway to his list and the giveaway grows and more JV partners advertise it to their list. You hope that many of the people on the JV partner?s lists will see your giveaway item and sign up for it and thus be added to your list.

3 Your own opt-in list

This is the list that you want to build as large as possible. Each person on this list is someone that has subscribed in some way to your newsletter or free offer and opted-in to receive emails from you.

So, you could send your new affiliate program to your own list. Some of your subscribers will open your email and buy your affiliate program. Some will also promote your affiliate program to their list and that will increase your sales even more.

4. Twitter list

Let?s go modern a bit and look at Twitter. In Twitter your list is called your followers. In any case they are just a group of people that you can send messages to. These messages are called tweets.

But it is still a list of people that you have the opportunity to promote your products to. Here the key is to use your Twitter list in such a way as to get some of your Twitter followers onto your opt-in list.

5. Buyer?s list

Some will go so far as to say that you don?t want to build a list of subscribers and that the money is not in the list. They advocate that you should build a list of buyers.
However, that is just a list that has been leveraged to become buyers.

The fact that they have bought is a good indication that they will likely buy again. But it is still a list.

6. Buy a list

You will even see people trying to purchase a list or sale you a list. But don?t go that route. You will get into the spamming world quick.

7. Email swap list

Here you team up with someone else to leverage his list to build your list. At the same time he uses your list to build his list. In essence you advertise your newsletter to his list in the hope that some of the people on his list will subscribe to your list.

At the same time he advertises his list to your list; hoping that some of your subscribers will also subscribe to his list.

Regardless of the name you give to it, building your list is the name of the game with internal marketing. It is so important that nearly every one that tries to coach you in the internet marketing arena will take you down the list building road.

In truth you cannot market a product in the internet marketing world without a list. You have to have someone to tell about your product or you will not have anyone buy your product. So it is imperative that you start building your list now.

You may use safelists, Traffic exchanges lists, JV partner?s lists, Twitter followers, someone else?s list, social marketing 2.0 lists, email swap lists, etc. Any of these lists may prove successful. But, that success will be measured in terms of getting people onto your own list because that is where the real success is.

All of these Internet marketing techniques are geared toward the same end ? list building. All of these and more are used by internet marketers because the money is in the list. And by any name, the objective is to build a list of people that you can market your products to.

Google Denies Oracle Assertion That It Paid Bloggers to Advocate in Android-Java Case

The shadowy cottage industry of companies paying bloggers to advocate for them suddenly has its slip showing.

A week ago, the San Jose, Calif. federal court that heard Oracle's recent lawsuit against Google alleging that the huge search company infringed upon its Java patents to build its Android mobile device operating system issued an order several days ago instructing the two companies to disclose the names of people commenting or reporting on the case who received money for their services.

Presiding Judge William Alsup did this, he said, because he was worried that both parties ?may have retained or paid print or internet authors, journalists, commentators or bloggers who have and/or may publish comments on this issues in the case.? He did not exaplin, however, how this paid blogging might have affected the outcome of the case, which Google won and that Oracle still may appeal.

In its response filed Aug. 17, Oracle revealed that it has been paying Germany-based copyright specialist Florian Mueller as a Tweeting and blogging consultant to explain its side of the story.

This was no surprise to anyone following the case, however. Mueller, who writes a well-read blog called FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) Patents, has always been upfront about his relationship with Oracle in communications with journalists.

Mueller's contract with Oracle prohibits him from spelling out exactly what Oracle pays him to do, but Mueller himself wrote that he is not paid to blog specifically about the case. ?They pay me for consulting on antitrust issues especially related to standard-essential patents,? he wrote.

For its part, Oracle also alleged in the court document that Google "maintains a network of direct and indirect 'influencers' to advance Google's intellectual property agenda." Oracle said this network is extensive and comprised of "attorneys, lobbyists, trade associations, and bloggers."

Oracle said in the response that it has identified two such Google-funded "influencers": Ed Black, the head of the Computer and Communications Industry Association, and Jonathan Band, a lobbyist who includes CCIA amongst his clients.

Not so, Google said.

In its own court response filed Aug. 17, the huge search and Web services company denied that it has paid any writer to lobby on its behalf in the blogosphere.

In a statement to the press issued the same day, Google said: ?Our reply to the court is clear. No one on our side paid journalists, bloggers, or other commentators to write about this case.?

Oracle on June 20 absorbed a second legal defeat from Google by accepting zero financial damages in the first step of its quest to sue the search engine company for using Java application programming interfaces in Android without purchasing a license for them.

In the landmark IT court case that began April 16, a federal judge ruled May 31 that Java APIs used by Google in building the now-popular mobile-device operating system are not protected by copyright.

Oracle, plaintiff in the case and maintainer of the Java programming language as well as organizer of its open-source community, reiterated that it will "vigorously" appeal the verdict. The company had asked for nearly $1 billion in restitution and an injunction against Google for using the Android OS.

Ailing startup OnLive slashes staff, seeks more funding

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - OnLive, once touted as having the potential to popularize Internet gaming and threaten console makers like Nintendo and Microsoft, slashed its work force by 50 percent and shifted its assets into a newly formed company.

In an unusual restructuring effort led by Lauder Partners over the weekend, OnLive rolled assets from technology to trademarks into a newly created company and fired half its 200 employees. OnLive is backed by AT&T, Time Warner Inc and smartphone maker HTC Corp.

"OnLive, Inc's board of directors, faced with difficult financial decisions for OnLive, Inc, determined that the best course of action was a restructuring under an 'Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors,'" it said in a statement.

OnLive, which allows users to play video games hosted on servers, similar to on-demand movie services, was rolled out in 2010 after being in development for seven years. Its deep-pocketed investors won it fans among industry insiders.

Silicon Valley-based venture capital group Lauder was the first investor in the newly formed company, which will retain the OnLive name and keep its services operating without disruption. An OnLive spokeswoman declined to provide financial details of the transaction.

Time Warner's Warner Bros studio, software service company Autodesk and Maverick Capital were other early investors in OnLive, which said it has 2.5 million subscribers. AT&T and Lauder invested in a later round in 2009.

OnLive's shareholders, employees and CEO Steve Perlman did not receive any compensation or stock in this arrangement, the company said. Perlman is a well-known entrepreneur who helped launch WebTV, which Microsoft bought in 1997.

OnLive said that the employees let go in the restructuring will be given offers to do consulting in return for options in the new company.

Sales of packaged games continue to shrink as new offerings on Web-based devices like smartphones and tablets attract gamers. Some industry watchers say gamers may increasingly switch to cloud gaming - which lets users play on the go or on multiple devices - from traditional consoles like the Xbox.

Sony Corp said last month that it would buy the privately held California-based gaming firm Gaikai Inc for about $380 million, to strengthen its own online gaming services.

Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC said it bought shares worth about $39 million in OnLive in February 2011.

"HTC estimates that it will need to recognize a $40 million provision for this investment loss," it said shortly after OnLive's announcement.

The Secrets Of Successful Web Hosting In The Internet-Age ...

It is important that you back up your website on a regular basis to your own server or another location and do not rely on your host to do this. If your host goes bankrupt or if their system just goes down, you might not be able to get your data back from them.

Selecting a web host can be an excellent chance for you to contribute to the environment. If you are running an online business, this can also be a fantastic marketing opportunity. You should be able to easily determine whether the web host utilizes renewable power sources, and if they have energy saving practices in place.

Can you get a free domain name? Believe it or not there are wonderful web hosting companies that will offer you a free domain name, plus you will not have to pay for the registration and renewal. Anytime you are saving a little money and still getting exactly what you need, you are doing a good thing for your business.

If you?re trying to locate a great web host and you have multiple websites, you should choose a host that allows you to add on additional domains. Try to find hosts which allow unlimited domains to be added on. This way, you do not have to worry about how many websites you have. You can utilize as many as you want.

If your web host is down for more than a day, find a new one fast. Short of a natural disaster, no web hosting company has any real excuses for long outages so don?t wait for a customer service representative to hand you a pre-rehearsed statement explaining this short- coming. Simply find a better company, fast.

Consider the available web hosting options, such as dedicated server space or shared memory, and plan ahead. Sticking to a budget is important, but think of your budget in terms of about six months. If you choose an inferior package to begin with, it will end up costing more in the long run.

Make sure that you think of smoking as an all or nothing situation. Do not argue with yourself in your head about how much you think you need to have a cigarette. Anytime you feel the urge to debate try to remind yourself of the reasons that you are quitting.

Find out if the web host you are considering offers a trial period. A trial period is a great way to identify potential issues, particularly whether there will be any downtime. It also gives you an opportunity to test the level of expertise and responsiveness of their customer service. You should take advantage of the trial period prior to making any kind of commitment.

No matter how reliable your host is, you should always have a back up of your files on your computer or on another server. In case your host goes down for too long, you will be able to open a new account and upload your website again instead of waiting for your host to come back online.

You should only get an expensive or fancy web host if you plan to load many videos to your site. The extra expense is not needed if you are simply loading information to your site. This is a great way to save money when you are looking for a host.

A lot of people don?t know this, but you can actually host a website from your own room without spending a dime. Using ?www? server programs are great for getting involved with web development and learning how things work on a higher level. Of course, unlike actual web hosts, you most likely won?t be able to offer the constant up-time, strict security, or updating customer service.

There?s no question that free web hosting is useful to some people. It depends on the reason for your website. If you plan on doing business online, use the tips above to help choose a web hosting company that can give you fast, reliable service so that you can build a strong business foundation upon which to grow your sales.

Etsy bans body parts, poisons, drugs and more

Etsy

By Rosa Golijan

Bad news for folks who were hoping to buy a bucket of bodily fluids, a handful of mercury-filled thermometers or some "herbal smoking blends" online: You can no longer do it on Etsy.

In a post on Etsy's news blog, policy manager Lauren Engelhardt explains that?the?e-commerce site?? which encourages people to buy and sell handcrafted or vintage merchandise ? has updated its?"prohibited items list" after "extensively researching some offbeat and fascinating topics."

In an effort to maintain the safe atmosphere for both shoppers and sellers ??and to protect their own interest, one would assume ??the folks at Etsy?have expanded their prohibited items list to include smokeable products (such as "herbal smoking blends, tobacco-alternatives, and other products that one might commonly smoke in a pipe or cigarette form"), human remains and body parts,?hazardous?materials (things that are flammable, explosive, corrosive, poisonous and so on), items which require the transfer of a title of ownership, and items which include "medical drug claims."

Incense (defined as "product that is burned to release a scent into the air in a room"), human hair, human teeth, empty lighters and tobacco pipes without carburetors are still allowed after the policy changes ??as long as they comply with Etsy's usual marketplace rules and any applicable laws.

According to?Engelhardt's blog post,?the Etsy staff is reaching out to folks who are affected by the policy changes in order to help them comply with the new rules, by either removing listings or editing listing information.

With Apologies to Pete Seeger: Turn, Turn, Turn (Your Cell Phone Off)!

No cell phone

Texting during a business meeting? Miss Manners would not appove.

You?ve been looking forward to having lunch with a friend or colleague you haven?t seen in a long time, and he or she will not part with his or her cell phone. You attempt to engage in a conversation, but he or she is too distracted by his or her smart phone to bother. Suddenly, you feel like you are dining alone (or competing with the cell phone for attention?!).

Check, please.

Cell phones are a great invention and can be wonderful communications tool. One device enables you to make phone calls, text clients (if they are amenable to this form of communication), check and send email, check your Facebook page, Tweet, browse the Web, etc. It can, however, become easy to ?hide? behind our Android and Blackberry phones and neglect the importance of actually talking to someone face-to-face.

Connecting with people is one of the foundations of having a successful business. If you are too busy texting while meeting with someone,??you give the impression that the person?s time is not as important as yours, and you may appear to be self-absorbed.

Non-verbal communication is an important part of conversations. Facial expressions (raised eyebrows, smiles or frowns, etc.)) can give many clues as to how, for example, a current or potential client might be feeling about an idea or thought you are trying to convey. It?s hard to see these when you are distracted by an email you are trying to send or if you are busy updating your Facebook page.

Put the ?social? back in ?social media? and get out there. Just remember to please put your cell phone away.

New virus hits Middle East, targets financial information

Yet another major computer virus is hitting the Middle East, this time targeting financial and banking information.

Russian security firm Kapersky Labs discovered the virus in its research of Flame ? which the company was first to reveal ? in June 2012. Flame was the cyber-espionage cousin of the STUXNET virus ? the cyberweapon that targeted and destroyed uranium enrichment centrifuges at the secret Iranian nuclear facility at Natanz in 2010.

The newly discovered virus Gauss ? named after German mathematician Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss?? targets the data of clients of several Lebanese banks, including?Bank of Beirut, EBLF, BlomBank, ByblosBank, FransaBank and Credit Libanais. Citibank and PayPal users are also targeted by the virus.

?Gauss is a complex, nation-state sponsored cyber-espionage toolkit designed to steal sensitive data, with a specific focus on browser passwords, online banking account credentials, cookies, and specific configurations of infected machines,? said Kapersky Labs in a statement Thursday.

It can also infect USB drives and store stolen data in hidden file if it needs to do so.

?The spread of infection is undetermined,? said the company on its website. Kapersky said that, while at least since May 2012, the number of infected computers could number in the tens of thousands. Kapersky also said that while the design of Gauss is similar to Flame, the geography Gauss targeted is different. The majority of systems infected by Flame were reported in Iran.

The virus is currently dormant ? the servers went offline shortly after it was discovered.

Kapersky suggested in May that both STUXNET and Flame were of U.S./Israeli origin, a claim aggravated by the so-called national security leaks by the Obama administration involving the U.S. cybersecurity program Olympic Games.

Business Marketing Success Tip: How to Design an Email Signature ...

Saturday, August 11th, 2012 at 12:49 pm ?

Question: Other than your website, what?s on the list of main ways in which you communicate with your potential customers, fellow workers and good friends?

Answer: Through e-mail. Despite this, an email signature is actually always overlooked as a marketing and personal branding resource.

Think about the amount of emails you send out on a regular basis then consider for just a moment how many branding opportunities are falling through your fingers in not refining your e-mail signature! Initial perceptions count and past the first impression, an e-mail signature is a superb regular branding tool.

We live in such a cluttered world that you have to be doing all you can to stand out and slash through. Your main aim ought to be to demonstrate to people that you?re worth attention (credible within your industry), but also worthwhile connecting with ? that you are different.

Below are 6 top tips for an email signature that pops!

Business up top, party down below: Place general info first because they are what individuals might want to rapidly reference. Name, position, mobile, company web-site. This will take up to 4 lines, allowing you 1-3 lines to party! (see below)

Proof read it (many times): Spelling and grammar mistakes are a killer of personal brand name. You can?t afford to miss the basics due to the message it transmits to your customers. After all, if you fail to get your e-mail signature right, how on earth can you assist your clients?

Frequent updates: What ever is new and relevant to your target audience should be positioned in the signature and modified month to month. It?s a 60 second job to acheive it. Just think about the influence of a regular email signature update over the course of a year, or two, or three if you have a bunch of people in your business circles that get exposed to frequent emails. Over 36 months, that is 36 different communications, if you?ve updated monthly!

Call to action: When it is relevant to your customers, why not market it? Organizations pay out hundreds or thousands or more dollars advertising their organization with main stream marketing strategies. E-mail promotion costs nothing.

Social media profiles: These are a necessity and I don?t have to go over the necessity of social media because we?re all informed. The email signature is a free marketing opportunity for your user profiles. From a business-building and personal-branding viewpoint, as a combined collection, your social media profiles are bordering on being nearly as important as your website in my opinion.

Written URLs: These have a much better chance of coming through with your e-mail than hyperlinks.

My husband has a history of heart disease in his family. ?He?s already on medications for high blood pressure. ?His father has had bypass surgeries, heart attacks, and a stint placed into an artery. ?Again, the future doesn?t look so great. ?So, we do what we can to control the things that we are able. ?We have stopped smoking. ?We are working on losing weight, eating healthier and getting exercise. ?We have to realize that we are not getting any younger. ?So, we will take vitamins and supplements and make sure that all of the things that we can improve, are improved!

But what if?

I don?t live my life according to the what if?s but, I do have to think about and prepare for things that may come. ?Things like dialysis, kidney transplant, etc.

I have health and life insurance. ?That, in itself, is a burden that is lightened. ?But, we also are going to sit down and work on living wills, powers of attorney, and other legal matters that need to be addressed. ?These are the best things that we can do for our children. ?No parent wants to be a burden on their children. ?Please take the time to think into the future and what could happen if you were to become ill or die. ?What would your children be left with? ?Memories made or making medical decisions?

Manning gives big crowd some thrills

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) ? On his first snap, Peyton Manning went deep. He overshot Demaryius Thomas but nonetheless showed off his arm strength to any doubters that might remain.

On his 14th and final snap of the Denver Broncos' summer scrimmage Saturday, Manning found Eric Decker for a 9-yard touchdown toss that drew the largest ovation from the biggest crowd ever to watch the team practice.

In between, it was just so-so. The Broncos (No. 10 in the AP Pro32) had two three-and-outs before Manning drove them downfield for the score.

But it was another mile marker in Manning's comeback from his lost 2011 season and a tuneup for Thursday night's exhibition opener at Chicago, when the four-time MVP suits up in a game for the first time since playing in the Pro Bowl following the 2010 season.

Manning missed all of last season with a nerve injury in his neck that sapped his arm strength and led to tearful departure from Indianapolis.

He's shown no ill effects from the injury and nary any rust in his right arm this summer.

Manning's first appearance in blue and orange at Sports Authority Field drew 41,304 fans, almost double the old record of 20,782 set two years ago when a guy by the name of Tim Tebow was the main attraction.

Amid the sea of orange No. 18 jerseys were some forlorn Colts fans who donned his old colors. One of them held up a sign that read, "We drove 15 hrs 2 c Manning. We miss u in Indy, Peyton."

The crowd went wild when Manning came out of the tunnel and when he signed autographs on his way back. They cheered just about every move he made in between.

"Well, it was a great crowd," Manning said. "I know players were pumped; they were kind of feeding off the energy of the fans and everybody was into it. It will be a good film to learn from on Monday once we study. I thought there were some good things, and some things we need to work on, obviously, but overall, it was a productive day, in my opinion."

The starters on each side of the ball faced the backups on the other, so Manning didn't get to see the full force of Denver's defense led by Champ Bailey, Von Miller and Elvis Dumervil ? they wouldn't have been allowed to hit him anyway.

"I thought we started a little slow offensively but once we got in the groove of it, getting those competitive juices back, I thought we executed pretty well," coach John Fox said. "I think defensively, we looked pretty good against that second unit. So, all in all, I thought it was pretty good for our first outing."

On the first play, Manning overthrew Thomas over the middle.

"Yeah, I tried to go deep," Manning said. "That's something that you do every now and then during a game. I could tell during the 7-on-7 early on that throwing the short passes wasn't real exciting for the crowd, so the last play of my 7-on-7, I actually changed that play to a deep pass just to try to keep the fans from leaving, I guess."

He hit Andre Caldwell along the right sideline for a 60-yard scoring play.

Although he couldn't duplicate the deep ball in the scrimmage, he capped his night with a nice touchdown toss to Decker, his favorite target so far in Denver.

"I thought Decker's back-shoulder touchdown catch was awesome," Manning said. "It was excellent coverage by (Drayton) Florence, but Decker did a good job holding his eyes until the last minute. The back shoulder fade is a hard route to cover, and that's something he and I have been working on, so it was good to get that into play today."

Manning made the call himself, too.

"The headphones went down, actually," Manning said. "Instead of burning a timeout, (offensive coordinator Mike) McCoy told me, 'If the phones go down, just call something that you like.'"

So, he did.

And now it's onto next week and preparation for the preseason games, which Manning indicated he would treat as he always has. In Indy, Manning didn't throw many passes in the exhibition games but he generally played a series or two in the opener, into the second quarter in the second game and maybe one series after halftime in the third game before sitting out the fourth one altogether.

"I think there's a lot that we can try to get out of preseason," Manning said. "You want to try to see different scenarios if you can. You'd love to get some short yardage, red-zone, goal-line, two-minute offense. I thought today was ? the two three-and-outs to start weren't good, but we came back, had a good long drive and converted a couple of third downs, got a little red-zone work, got a third-down touchdown score.

"Hopefully you get all those types of situations throughout the four preseason games. I sort of look at the preseason as a group, as all four, trying to accomplish something. So, hopefully we can make some strides in the preseason. We still have some work to do."

Notes: Fox said the only injury was to RB Mario Fannin, who wasn't putting weight on his left leg as he was helped to the sideline during the scrimmage. Fannin also got hurt in camp last year. ... TE Anthony Miller hobbled off after a low hit from S Syd'Quan Thompson on the final play. ... With S Quinton Carter having undergone right knee surgery after a nasty fall inside the team's practice bubble last month, the Broncos signed free agent S Jim Leonhard, who is coming off a December knee surgery. ... RT Orlando Franklin (concussion) returned to action.

Samsung's Aug. 15 event gets official, Galaxy Note 10.1 unveiling likely

Android Central

Press invites are starting to go out for Samsung's Aug. 15 special event in the U.S., and all signs seem to point to a Galaxy Note 10.1 unveiling. The event, previously teased by Samsung a "major product announcement" for the "newest Galaxy device," seems likely to set the stage for the U.S. launch of Samsung's 10.1-inch stylus-and-tablet combo. The invitation is accompanied by the graphic above, which is is a dead ringer for the back of the Galaxy Note 10.1, leaving little doubt as to what Sammy's got up its sleeve.

The Galaxy Note 10.1 underwent a major redesign following its original debut at Mobile World Congress back in February. It's now sporting a 1.4GHz quad-core Exynos chip, along with a slot for its "S Pen" stylus, just like it's 5.3-inch sibling. The Note 10.1 is expected to be joined shortly by the Note 2, which Samsung will unveil in Berlin on Aug. 29, but about which comparatively little is known.

However, as we reported this morning, U.S. retailer Negri Electronics has already gotten its hands on Galaxy Note 10.1 stock, which it intends to ship over the next few days. So come Aug. 15, we could be in the very odd position of having devices in the wild before the official Note 10.1 announcement.

In any case, we'll be live from an undisclosed location on the date to bring you full coverage of the U.S. Galaxy Note 10.1 launch. Check past the break for the rest of the invite, with secret stuff redacted.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean proven carrying rough but working code for multi-user support (video)

Android 41 Jelly Bean proven carrying rough but working code for multiuser support video

If there's ever been a persistent gripe among families sharing mobile devices, it's been the absence of multiple user profiles -- hand that iPad or Nexus 7 to Junior and you may have to play a spot-the-differences game when it comes back. Some long overdue testing of previously found code references in Jelly Bean shows that Google, at least, has explored ending that anxiety over who uses the family gadgets. Command-line code in AOSP-based versions of Android 4.1 will let you create a separate guest profile, complete with its own lock screen security, home screen layout and limited settings. To say that the code is unpolished would be an understatement, however. Apps and even some notifications cross over from the main account, which could prove more than a little embarrassing if the hardware is left in the wrong hands. At least it's easy to revert back, as the instructions (and video after the break) show. The real challenge will be waiting to see when -- or really, if -- Google gets to finishing multi-user code and turns that Nexus 7 into the communal tablet we want it to be.

Beacon Hill Investment Advisory, LLC ? Blog Archive ? New 401(k ...

You may have heard about new disclosure rules that will soon apply to 401(k) plans. Before describing what?s ahead, however, a look back may be helpful. (While we?ll refer to 401(k) plans in this article, the new rules also apply to other employer-sponsored plans that allow participants to direct their own investments, commonly referred to as ?self-directed plans.?)

Background

Most 401(k) plans are governed by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA) (governmental plans, owner-only plans, certain 403(b) plans, and certain church plans are not). One of the primary reasons Congress enacted ERISA was to protect retirement plan assets, and one of the important ways ERISA does so is through its rules governing the conduct of plan fiduciaries.

In general, plan fiduciaries include the plan administrator, anyone providing investment advice for a fee, and anyone who exercises discretionary authority or control over the plan or the plan?s assets. Plan fiduciaries must discharge their duties with respect to the plan prudently, and solely in the interest of participants and beneficiaries.

A fiduciary who breaches his or her duty to the plan may be personally liable for any losses that occur as a result of that breach. The investment of plan assets is a fiduciary act governed by ERISA?s fiduciary standards.

Section 404(c) plans

But who is responsible for losses in a self-directed plan, where the participants themselves, and not the plan sponsor or an investment manager, select the investments for their retirement accounts? To answer this question, in 1992 the Department of Labor (DOL) issued regulations that allow 401(k) plan fiduciaries to avoid responsibility for losses in self-directed plans that occur as a result of a participant?s exercise of investment control over his or her own account, if specific requirements are satisfied.

To avoid liability, self-directed plans must provide participants with a diversified choice of investments, and must disclose very specific information about the plan and its investments (and comply with certain other requirements). While these rules are voluntary, many (if not most) 401(k) plans choose to comply, in order to shift liability for losses away from the plan?s fiduciaries.

A 401(k) plan that complies with these rules is known as a ?Section 404(c) plan,? after the section of ERISA that governs self-directed plans. A plan?s summary plan description (SPD) should indicate if the plan intends to be a Section 404(c) plan.

What?s changing?

As self-directed plans have grown more popular, the DOL has become increasingly concerned that participants might not have access to, or might not be considering, information critical to making informed decisions about the management of their accounts?particularly information about investment choices, fees, and expenses.

As a result, in October 2010, the DOL issued new regulations that require all self-directed 401(k) plans?both those that choose to comply with Section 404(c) and those that do not?to provide the same detailed information to participants about the plan and its investments, on a regular and periodic basis, so that participants can make informed decisions with regard to the management of their individual accounts.

Some information must be provided on an annual basis, and some information must be provided quarterly. For calendar year plans, the initial annual disclosure must be furnished no later than August 30, 2012. The first quarterly statement must be furnished no later than November 14, 2012 (for July through September 2012).

Participants in 401(k) plans that comply with ERISA Section 404(c) are already receiving most of the information required by the new regulations. In general, more detailed information about investment fees and expenses must now be disclosed to participants.

Another change is that plan investment information must now be provided in chart form, so that participants are better able to compare investment alternatives. And plans will no longer be required to automatically provide a prospectus to participants, although one must be provided upon request.

Which plans must comply with the new rules?

These new disclosure rules apply to 401(k) plans and other plans that allow participants to direct their own investments, but they don?t apply to IRAs, SEPs, or SIMPLE IRA plans. They also don?t apply to plans that aren?t covered by ERISA.

RapidAir Install - Family Woodworking

A ways back I got a 25% off coupon for Rockler. I snagged one of their RapidAir Master kits before the price jumped $40 . Anyway, the installation of it finally floated to the top of the to-do list. I have a long reel of Flexeel hose mounted to the wall which is great. I just wanted a quick-to-grab air supply over by the tablesaw and another over where I do a lot of hand sanding and finishing. Took all of about 2 hours to install, fishing the hose behind the lumber rack and around light fixtures . I used regular 1/2" hose clips from the BORG.

Here's the Costco C&H compressor that I thought would last me a year or so . . . 8 years ago, the junction manifold and a view with the noise cover in place (built of scrap PB lined with egg-crate foam, works too well, I've never stopped to make a 'better' one) .

Many Olympians Suffer From Asthma

Click here to listen to this podcast

Olympic athletes might appear to have the cardiovascular and respiratory systems of superheroes. But a new study reveals that one in 12 Olympic athletes uses asthma treatments. The findings are in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. [Kenneth Fitch, An Overview of Asthma and Airway Hyper-Responsiveness In Olympic Athletes]

That usage has jumped since the mid-?90s. So the International Olympic Committee now requires athletes to provide medical proof of an asthma diagnosis before allowing them to use an inhaler during the competition.

Both cold and polluted air increase the risk for asthma, affecting winter and summer athletes alike. Dangerous ozone and particulate matter are worse in warm weather, so athletes in the Summer Olympics are slightly more likely to suffer from asthma. Winter events, such as cross-country skiing, can also damage airways with cold air and ice particles.

But athletes with asthma have a better chance of winning?and not because the drugs enhance their performance. Asthma occurs more often in older endurance athletes, suggesting that years of intense training could be to blame for the condition?and to thank for the conditioning.
