“The final year of the show ... will be next year"
Glee creator Ryan Murphy has announced that the end is nigh for the Fox series. Speaking to members of the press at the Paley Center in Beverly Hills, CA last night, Murphy revealed that the next season of the show will be the last of the series. Furthermore, Murphy explains that his original plan for the end of the series has to be changed due to the untimely death of actor Cory Monteith. The next season of “Glee” will be its last, so says co-creator of the series Ryan Murphy. At a Paley Center event honoring FX Network last night, Murphy said the Fox dramedy will not go on beyond its sixth season. Murphy also admitted that the death of star Cory Monteith in July has forced him to come up with a different ending for the show. In setting the end date so far in advance, Murphy becomes the latest showrunner to set a clear path to mapping out the conclusion of the show’s overarching storylines, which revolve around students and teachers at Midwestern high school … “The final year of the show, which will be next year, was designed around Rachel and Cory/Finn’s story. I always knew that, I always knew how it would end,” Murphy told TVLine. ”I knew what the last shot was, he was in it. I knew what the last line was, she said it to him. So when a tragedy like that happens you sort of have to pause and figure out what you want to do, so we’re figuring that out now.” News of “Glee” coming to a close after its 2014 run arrives after the dramedy received a hearty double renewal in April, well before Monteith’s untimely death. Murphy’s confirmation of the plan to wrap the show after season six appeared to catch Fox and studio 20th Century Fox TV off guard on Thursday morning.
While I think the time has come to end the series, I’m actually surprised that Murphy always intended the series, comprised of a robust ensemble cast, to be centered on a pair of characters. It’s been clear from the start that Finn and Rachel (played by Corey Monteith and Lea Michele) were a central pair of characters on the show but I’m not sure it’s the best idea to make them the only integral characters on the show. Tho, I guess, the decision is up to Ryan Murphy ultimately. I suspect the death of Monteith affected him greatly and maybe he just doesn’t want to go on with the show now that he’s gone. Because the series has already been picked up turn next season, he can’t end the series after this season so …. yeah. Here’s hoping the lead time will give the writers enough time to craft a great ending for the series. Glee started out strong then it lost me. It’d be nice if it were able to win back the viewers that have been turned off by the show in recent years. We’ll see. There are only 1 1/2 seasons of Glee left … does this make you happy or sad?
