Canadian Daytime Talk Show 'The Social' Seeks U.S. Syndication Deal

TORONTO – U.S. indie distributor PPI Releasing is shopping the Canadian daytime talker The Social into the U.S. syndication market.

The weekday chat fest from Canadian broadcaster CTV bowed on Sept. 2, and features a team of four women debating current events, before being joined by celebrity guests.

"There is clearly enormous appeal for American audiences, as well," said Phil King, president of CTV programming and sports, after previous original series from the Canadian broadcaster like Saving Hope, L.A. Complex, Flashpoint and Motive made it onto U.S. network schedules.

The four co-hosts for The Social, Melissa Grelo, Lainey Lui, Cynthia Loyst and Traci Melchor, make use of social media and product integration during their live broadcast.

PPI Releasing expects the Canadian talker will have produced over 200 episodes by the time a possible U.S. syndication takes place next year.

"The popularity of panel talk shows has sky-rocketed as both viewers and stations appreciate their diversity, breadth of subject matter and entertainment," said PPI principal Ritch Colbert on Wednesday.

PPI will offer the day-and-date series as a Monday to Friday strip to debut in broadcast syndication in the fall of 2014.

The distributor is also discussing a potential midseason launch as early as January 2014.
