LAS VEGAS ? Junior dos Santos looked at Frank Mir, wagged his finger and sent a message in the first round Saturday night.
Then in the second, the message was understood. Dos Santos, the Ultimate Fighting Championship's heavyweight champion, knocked out former two-time champ Frank Mir in his first title defense at UFC 146 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Mir, arguably the greatest submission artist in heavyweight history, shot for an early takedown against dos Santos, arguably the division's best boxer. The champ kept his balance, pulled his leg out from a footlock attempt, then shook his finger at Mir. Mir didn't attempt another takedown the rest of the fight and dos Santos dominated the striking game to put away Mir in the second. Dos Santos landed a big right hand that dropped Mir, then pounced to finish the fight on the ground.
"I came here to defend my belt, and I did it," dos Santos said. "That surprised me (that Mir didn't attempt more takedowns). The guy can take a punch. My hand is hurt (from punching him)."
Mir said it was simply a matter of not being able to take dos Santos' hard shots.
"He's fast, and I couldn't get out of the way," Mir said. "He hit me hard with too many of them, and I couldn't take it. They built up, and I couldn't do anything about it."
Earlier, former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez returned for the first time since losing his title to dos Santos and dominated Antonio Silva for a first-round TKO.
