threshold1Flightglobal.com said the 2006-registered aircraft HL7742 had accumulated 35,700 hours on 5,185 cycles at 31 March. The 777-200ER, one of 12 in the Asiana fleet, was powered by Pratt & Whitney PW4090 engines.

threshold3Images show the aft fuselage and landing gear separated, leaving the main body of the fuselage lying about 20 metres (65.6 feet) off? runway 28L.

It reports that the debris field extends from the apron of the runway to the remains of the main fuselage and wings lying several hundred feet ahead of the runway numbers. Parts of the aircraft?s tail fin and horizontal stabilisers are scattered on the runway apron.

The National Transportation Safety Board said an initial analysis of the cockpit voice and flight data recorder indicated:

  • The throttles were advanced a few seconds prior to impact and the engines appear to respond normally
  • The data indicate that the throttles were at idle and the airspeed slowed below target approach speed during the approach.
  • Call to go around made approximately 1.5-sec prior to impact
  • Sound of stick shaker began approx. 4-sec prior to impact.
  • Call to increase speed 7-sec prior to impact
  • Target speed for the approach was 137 knots.
  • The flight was cleared for the visual approach to RWY 28L, which was confirmed by the crew.
