Breast Cancer Prevention

Breast cancer is a type of cancer that has its roots in the breast tissue. It mainly originates from the milk ducts or lobules and cancers from the milk ducts are known as ductal carcinomas and those from the lobules are known as lobular carcinomas.? This is a disease that prevails in humans and other mammals. It the size of the tumor that decides what kind of treatment you will have to undergo. Treatments may vary from surgery, hormonal therapy, chemotherapy, radiation and immunotherapy.

With every passing day, breast cancer is spreading like a dreadful disease among millions of women. This disease is also related to loss of sexuality and body image. This disease is not only limited to women but also affects men. The rate of men are falling a prey to this disease is 1 % of all breast cancers. On account of this disease spreading rapidly, new medications are also being devised for its treatment and diagnosis. According to a survey it has been found that breast cancer is the second cause of cancer deaths among women in the United States. The first being lung cancer.

The rate of breast cancer is relatively more among women who had this disease earlier, those having family members carrying this disease and those having inherited cancer genes. Since prevention is always better than cure, you can follow some of these simple steps to reduce the risks of developing breast cancer:-

  • Reduce the intake of alcohol- the more alcohol you consume, the more likely you are to develop this cancer. Alcohol can increase women?s risk of developing breast cancer. Drinking alcohol does not mean that you will develop breast cancer but it surely increases your chance of developing it.
  • Control gaining weight- if you are overweight or obese, you are more likely to develop chances of breast cancer. The chances are more if you become obese at a later stage of your life particularly after menopause.
  • Indulge in plenty of physical activities- if you are physically active, you can maintain a healthy body. This in turn helps prevent breast cancer. The Department of Health and Human Services has recommended that for adults the rate of physical activity is 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity and 75 minutes of rigorous physical activity a week. In addition to this one must also incorporate strength training exercises in their fitness regime at least twice a week. But then if you are making the start from today itself, then you must slowly and gradually make the move and do not force everything on yourself at one go.
  • Breast feed- this is one important way to prevent breast cancer. The longer you breast feed your child, the more protected are you from the chances of developing breast cancer.
  • Put a halt to hormone therapy- if you are undergoing a hormone therapy for a long span of time, then the more likely are you to develop breast cancer. If you just cannot do away with the therapy, then ask your physician to give you the lowest dose and make the duration as short as possible.
  • Stay away from pollution- though further studies are going on regarding this, yet some relation has been found between breast cancer and exposure to polyclinic aromatic hydrocarbons that persist in vehicle exhaust and air pollution.

These are some of the few measures that you can take to reduce the risks of developing breast cancer. But if situation worsens and the cancer is detected, you have no other option but to go for a surgery or any other treatment as suggested by your physician.
