Texas scheduled to execute man for 1991 murder

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Texas on Wednesday is scheduled to execute a man who murdered a woman in 1991, stabbing her repeatedly with an ice pick and strangling her with stereo wire at her Dallas-area apartment.

Bobby Lee Hines, then 19, was staying next door to Michelle Wendy Haupt, 26, in the apartment of a man who did maintenance work for the complex and had master keys to all the apartments, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Hours after neighbors heard screaming and other loud noises, Haupt's body was found just inside the door of her apartment with about 18 puncture wounds, according to a summary of the case from the Texas attorney general's office.

Hines' fingerprint and bloody palm print were found in the apartment. Haupt's gold sand-dollar charm was found in Hines' pants pocket.

Hines' execution was scheduled for earlier this year, but it was postponed so that DNA testing could be conducted on fingernail clippings collected from Haupt's body. The testing did not exclude Hines as a source of the DNA, according to the attorney general's office.

He is scheduled to be put to death by lethal injection in Huntsville, Texas, after 6 p.m. local time.

Hines, 40, would be the 11th person executed this year in Texas and the 34th in the United States.

5 Benefits of Upgrading Your Home with New Replacement Windows

Last updated 2 hours 6 minutes ago

New windows can add life and energy to a home. They can make it look better from the outside and sunnier on the inside. They can also increase its energy efficiency. Here are five reasons to consider installing new replacement windows:

Increased savings. Modern windows are far more energy-efficient than those of the past, especially double-pane windows. They significantly decrease heat transfer across the pane, leading to better insulation in both summer and winter. New windows will also be tightly sealed. Your heating and cooling system won?t have to work as hard and you?ll end up saving money on energy costs.

Added value. Energy-efficient windows can add value to your home and increase its equity. Home improvement studies show that window replacement results in a very high return on investment. When the home is sold, the cost is almost entirely regained because of the increased value of the house.

Better security. Old windows can be replaced with new ones of a different style. Many older windows require a crank to swing them open. Others slide upward and are secured with a latch. These can be replaced with windows that don?t open at all, or that have a smaller section that can be opened to permit fresh air. Windows that a person can fit through can be eliminated entirely.

Sun protection. Energy-efficient windows feature special, invisible coatings that offer greater protection from the sun. Some coatings block infrared rays that heat up the house. Other coatings block ultraviolet rays that cause carpeting, furniture, paintings, photos, and other valuables to fade over time. Both can be added to window glass for maximum sun protection.

Improved aesthetics. Changing the style of your windows can give your house a whole new look. Window frame materials, styles, and colors can be matched to any home to create the perfect image. Not only will this enhance the curb appeal of your home; it can also increase the natural lighting and make the interior brighter and more inviting.

The Story of Scrattch: One of the World's Most Innovative Startups ...

Guest post by?Louise Donnelly-Davey, serial entrepreneur and Founder of?Scrattch, a platform which?seeks to streamline the way users search, store and share the vast amount of information accessed each day across the internet through the application of an online virtual filing system. Scrattch has just been named in the GEW 50,?a list of the world's 50 most innovative new companies, compiled by the?Global Entrepreneurship Week?as part of the?Startup Open, a competition that recognizes startups with high-growth potential.

We were thrilled to be named in the GEW 50?last week?as one of the only companies from New Zealand featured.?

I had the idea for Scrattch over 12 months ago and have been working on it ever since. I have since added two new co-founders (developers) to the team and we are set for launch at the end of this month.?

Before having children (I now have three aged ten and under) I spent a fair bit of time at University. I don?t think I really ever knew exactly what I wanted to do or be. Nothing seemed to fit. I ended up with qualifications in Criminology, Education and Public Policy after spending a total of 6 years at Uni. I then went on to work for various corporates, none of which provided me with any significant fulfillment.?

After the birth of my second child I started my first real business, a clothing design company. We did well and after reaching an international market I decided that the overheads were far too high and that this particular venture, although fun, was never going to enable myself and my family to be financially secure.

I went on to create a successful online social network for people in the kids product industry, which was subsequently sold and is still going today.

After the sale of my social network I felt lost. And it wasn?t until myself and a friend embarked on an online magazine MAEVE, for the 30-40 year old female demographic that I felt right again. It was then that I realized that I needed to be creating something, that I was not fulfilled when I wasn?t being innovative. MAEVE was sold and I then went on to create Scrattch.?

A bit about what we are doing...?

We saw a problem... one which was frustrating and one which was not being tackled properly by any other bookmarking or archiving platforms.

Imagine an International library, whereby anyone could donate books, magazines, videos or any manner of data to the general pool of information available. Next, imagine that the curator of this International library was never allowed to organsise, categorise or file any of the donated material into any sort of semblance for users to browse. The curator was simply allowed to accept information and pile it up, row after row, floor to ceiling. Every now and then he was allowed to promote a few items that he considered interesting or that people had paid him to keep at the front.?

Every time a user entered the library to search for a book or another piece of information they would struggle through the first two rows of the available material, perhaps they would find what they wanted, perhaps they wouldn?t. They eagerly grabbed at some of the items that the curator had highlighted in the hope that this would satisfy their needs.

The internet is not dissimilar. 22 years in the making. Each and every day new data gets added to the mounting repository of information.

Each and every day a user will attempt to find information that best matches their requirements. Unfortunately, the material that is returned on searches is often lacking in relevance and substance.? But we accept that the traditional search engines hold the answers to our needs.?

Our solution.... Scrattch ? Search. Store. Share is an online research, storage and sharing system designed to streamline the way internet users search, store and share the vast amount of information accessed each day across the internet.?

The massive amounts of data we consume each day on the internet is hard to keep track of, URL?s get moved, sites get archived or deleted, important information is often lost in amongst the chaos. More than one billion new pages are added to the Internet each day. In just 60 seconds more than 1500 blog posts, 600 YouTube videos and 6,600 Flickr photos are added to the mounting repository of data available online.?

Lots of noise. How do you find the message??

Scrattch alleviates this pain by enabling users to add their favourite web findings to their own virtual library, then share their favourites with others in the Scrattch community or keep their findings private. Scrattch also allows users to add their own unique content to their Scrattch library, create or join groups within the community and form discussions around topics of interest.

Scrattch is about bringing people together in a social forum over common interests and not common friends.?

Scrattch differs from many other bookmarking, archiving and data storage systems in many ways. Scrattch is leveraged for maximum social interaction, Scrattch enables the user to add their own unique content, take their content offline and; Scrattch is built on a simple platform which is easy to learn and intuitive to use. Scrattch is aimed at the educated internet browser, someone who regularly searches for great content on the net and who is confident in the web 2.0, semantic web or social media.?

Scrattch is fundamentally dedicated to creating meaningful context around your most important data. We are passionate about our mission. We see the internet as it is today as a throw away society.

We want to change the way people interact with the web. Bringing back a sense of ownership and contentment, quality over quantity.

We have had a busy year, being finalists in the ANZ Business Plan Competition and finalists in the Unlimited Magazine (Fairfax) Investment Challenge. As a result of the Investment Challenge we will be pitching to a group of investors at the end of this month.

And we have not even launched yet.

Louise has a degree in Criminology and a Masters in Public Policy, has successfully exited 3 businesses and is the original Founder of Scrattch, launching at the end of October 2012. Prior to stepping out on her own she worked for some of New Zealand's biggest corporates in New Ventures and started her professional career as an intern at the Ministry of Economic Development in their CapitalMarkets team. ?Lou has 3 children 10 and under and spends her weekends at the local ski fields.

USPTO has 'tentatively' invalidated Apple's key rubber-banding patent

FOSS Patents USPTO has invalidated Apple's rubberbanding patent

The US Patent and Trademark Office may have just thrown a wrench into Apple's recent courtroom triumph over Samsung by invalidating one of the patents at the heart of the victory: rubber-banding. We noted at the time that Apple hit a "home run" with that particular IP, as jurors declared that all 21 disputed Samsung devices infringed it, no doubt resulting in a large part of the $1 billion (and counting) owed by the Korean maker. "Claim 19" of patent 7469381, which covers that feature, was invalidated by the USPTO on two counts, both of which were cases of prior art that allegedly existed before Cupertino claimed them. Either one could be enough reason to throw out that part of the patent, according to FOSS Patents, provided that the USPTO's ruling stands up. Either way, Samsung has already brought the new information to Judge Koh's attention -- which might bring about some new action very soon.

Dutch art heist museum says security system in order

ROTTERDAM, The Netherlands (Reuters) - The Dutch art gallery at the center of an audacious heist last week said that the electronic locks on its doors were disarmed before thieves made off with paintings by Picasso, Monet and others worth tens of millions of dollars.

The seven stolen works - which also include a Gauguin, a Lucian Freud and a Meyer de Haan - were on loan from a private collection for a special exhibition at Rotterdam's Kunsthal of impressionism, expressionism, and other modern art movements.

The theft was one of the art world's most dramatic in recent years, and one of the biggest in the Netherlands.

The apparent ease with which the thieves entered and escaped has raised questions about the Kunsthal's security system and whether an insider was involved.

The Kunsthal said in a statement on Monday that the electronic locks on its doors were in working order, but were designed to automatically unbolt shortly after the burglar alarm was set off. After that, only mechanical door locks stood between the intruders and the Kunsthal's treasures.

"The theft on Monday night suggests the intruders forced the lock after the unbolting, presumably quickly," the statement said.

The thieves forced the mechanical lock on an emergency exit at the rear of the ground floor gallery. Police arrived at the scene within five minutes, but the intruders had already gone.

Defending its security installation in the face of speculation, the gallery said an independent inspection of its security apparatus in August had found only that one motion detector was blocked off. It had been immediately repaired.

On Friday, the police released security camera footage which showed the thieves entering through the back door before disappearing from the camera's field of view. Seconds later, they come back into view carrying bulky objects, and leave the same way they entered.

The faces of the thieves cannot be seen clearly on the footage, but police are appealing to the public to come forward if they recognize their bags or clothing. Police say they have already received 60 tips relating to the robbery.

The Kunsthal, in Rotterdam's leafy museum quarter, does not have its own collection.

It had only just opened a new exhibition of works from the private Triton Foundation - collected by the Cordia family, which made its money in shipping and oil - to celebrate its 20th anniversary when the break-in took place during Monday night.

The gallery reopened on Thursday, and the empty spaces previously occupied by the stolen paintings were filled with new works from the Triton collection.

Police appeals for information are posted around the museum park, home to half a dozen museums besides the Kunsthal, which was designed by Rem Koolhaas.

The museum has not said which paintings now hang in place of the stolen works, which included Matisse's "La Liseuse en Blanc et Jaune", Monet's "Waterloo Bridge, London" and "Charing Cross Bridge, London", Gauguin's "Femme devant une fen?tre ouverte", De Haan's "Autoportrait" and Freud's "Woman with Eyes Closed".

But even the absence of Picasso's "T?te d'Arlequin", which was the exhibition's centerpiece, has not dampened interest in the exhibition, which was crowded on Sunday.

"Numbers are way up since the theft," said the cloakroom attendant with a smile. "Disaster tourists."

Tornado, rain and snow hit Northern California

Northern California finally got weather to match the calendar, as a storm smacked the area Monday bringing rain, snow and at least one tornado.

The twister touched down about 3:15 p.m. a couple of miles south of Yuba City, and bounced from Sutter County into Yuba.

It took shingles off houses and hit the Mallard Lake Golf Course, where a golfer told the Marysville Appeal Democrat that it snapped a tree that struck him.

Sutter County Fire Department Battalion Chief John Shalowitz said firefighters could see the tornado touch down from their station in a mostly rural area about two miles south of Yuba City.

"It's a lot of telephone and cable lines down, but thankfully nobody was hurt," he told The Associated Press. "We have some roofing material that has been stripped from a couple of houses. A lot of trees down in the area."

The tornado followed earlier reports from the National Weather Service that it's radar had picked up a possible twister about nine miles southeast of Palermo. A number of funnel cloud sightings were reported as the storm moved northeast, including a call from the area of Loafer Creek on Lake Oroville.

As of deadline, there was no conformation that the funnel had touched down.

Even those distant from the wildest weather experienced something missing from the area for a long time: rain.

Chico saw 1.06 inches of rain, Oroville 0.85 inch and Paradise 1.78 inches.

It was the first time there's been measurable precipitation in Chico

since June 4, when 0.14 inch fell.

In the mountains as much as two feet of snow fell. The road through Lassen Volcanic National Park was closed, and snowplows were needed to keep Interstate 80 open.

Cost of Conserving Global Biodiversity Set at $76 Billion

Researchers hope the estimate will spur government action, and point out that the annual costs are a fraction of the value of nature's 'ecosystem services'

From Nature magazine

Protecting all the world's threatened species will cost around US$4 billion a year, according to an estimate published today in Science. If that number is not staggering enough, the scientists behind the work also report that effectively conserving the significant areas these species live in could rack up a bill of more than $76 billion a year.

Study leader Stuart Butchart, a conservation scientist at BirdLife International in Cambridge, UK, admits that the numbers seem very large. But ?in terms of government budgets, they?re quite trivial?, he says, adding that governments have already committed to taking this action in international treaties ? they just did not know how much it would cost.

The researchers also point out that the annual costs of proper conservation are but a fraction of the value of nature's ?ecosystem services?, such as pollination of crops and carbon sinks, estimated at between $2 trillion and $6 trillion. ?These sums are not bills, they?re investments in natural capital,? says Butchart. ?They?re dwarfed by the benefits we get back from nature.?

Under the internationally agreed Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), governments have committed to meeting 20 conservation targets by 2020, including improving the conservation status of threatened species. To come up with numbers for how much this might cost, Butchart and his team asked experts on 211 threatened bird species to estimate the cost of lowering the extinction risk for each species by one category on the Red List of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature .

Costing the Earth
The researchers concluded that improving the status of all the world?s 1,115 threatened bird species would cost between $875 million and $1.23 billion a year for the next decade. Adding in other animals raises the number to between $3.41 billion and $4.76 billion a year.

Another target of the CBD is to protect 17% of the Earth?s land surface. Estimates for this are harder to make, but by extrapolating from known land prices and management costs Butchart and his team put the number at $76.1 billion a year.

Exactly how much is now being spent to meet the convention?s targets is unclear, but spending will need to increase by ?at least an order of magnitude?, Butchart says. And although there is a large amount of uncertainty in these numbers, governments can still use them to begin planning ways to meet the targets they have already agreed to.

Henrique Pereira, who works on international conservation issues at the University of Lisbon in Portugal, says that although there are uncertainties inherent in extrapolating from birds to all species, the work is an ?extremely smart paper?.

?For the first time we have an estimate of how much these targets will cost,? he says. ?For any negotiations that occur over the next few years [on CBD targets], these numbers can be used as a reference.?

But Pereira also points out that the figure is for just two of the 20 targets agreed by the CBD. ?If you look at the range of targets for 2020, the total bill will be higher,? he says.

enlighten wheelwright: Arts and Entertainment: Astrology : A Science ...

Welcome to the?Arts and Entertainment

Human beings have always been curious to know their future. Whenever someone is in difficulty and cannot easily come out of it, he wants to know whether the days of his misery will come to an end at all. And if yes, then when? When one invests a great deal of time, effort or money into some project, it is natural to wonder whether that investment will bear some fruit. There have always been people around who have successfully predicted future events. Their methods have been different - some people can simply look into the future, some use tarot cards, some draw up an astrological chart which we call horoscopes, some read the lines in the palms of people. One cannot deny that future has been accurately

predicted many a times and by many a people. Each successful prediction proves that it is indeed possible to correctly predict future.

In the ancient times, astrologers were held to be in great esteem by the people. There was no difference between astronomers and astrologers. In fact, astronomy and Astrology were not considered to be two different subjects. Many will be surprised to know that most of the renowned scientists of the past, including Sir Isaac Newton, were astrologers too. In ancient India Astrology was known as "Jyotish Shastra" which included predictive Astrology as well as what we know as astronomy. Needless to say that the astrologers of that era were all great mathematicians too. An accomplished astrologer was called "Trikal-darshee" : one who could see past, present and future. It would perhaps not be an exaggeration to say that Astrology was considered to be the foremost branch of science.

Slowly over a period of time this subject came into disrepute.

How Astrology lost its exalted status?

It is a fact of life that people emulate successful, popular and respected persons. Seeing the social status enjoyed by astrologers, charlatans started masquerading as astrologers. They learnt a few tricks of the trade and started duping gullible people. It was and still is a very lucrative business. An astrologer earns money by making predictions while giving no guarantee that any of his predictions will turn out to be true. There is no money back guarantee :-). Once an astrologer sets up shop, people start coming to him in the hope that may be he will be able to foresee their future correctly. The astrologer is in a wonderful position. For example, he may make predictions about ten persons, getting only one prediction right. The nine persons, about whom he predicted wrongly, will never come back to him. But the tenth person, about which the astrologer was able to predict correctly, will not only come back to him again but also refer many other persons to him, citing personal experience. In this way, the business of an astrologer always flourishes, no matter how he himself fares in his trade. But the downside of this was that astrologers, as a group, started being seen as a lot of dubious persons like politicians of the modern age. Once such impression started gaining ground, Astrology as a subject no longer remained attractive to intelligent persons. People, who had talent, started to pursue other fields of knowledge. Over a period of time, the inevitable happened. No talent, worth its salt, chose to pursue Astrology as a vocation or a hobby and the outcome of this is for everyone to see in the present times.

There was one more very important reason for Astrology becoming one of the lesser fields of knowledge. It was the decline of India, the fountainhead of human civilization, and its loss of status as the repository of all the knowledge of the ancient world (see How India lost its Glory). The Islamic hordes, who attacked and looted India many a times and later ruled that country for hundred of years, had no respect for priceless works of art, the magnificent architecture and the other exalted areas of human endeavor. They destroyed most of the ancient temples, burnt down libraries like Nalanda and Takshshila and permanently took away innumerable books of infinite wisdom from the future generations of humanity. A great amount of recorded knowledge was lost, astrological books included. This loss proved to be irreparable, as the then Indian society became engaged in ensuring its survival and a constant struggle against the aggressors. The few people, who had some invaluable texts and scriptures with them, were hard put to preserve the remaining works of ancient sages. That is why, when one studies Astrology , he feels as if some vital links are missing. With the Hindu philosophy losing its ground it was natural that Astrology would lose its prominent place too. As the modern science developed and the scientific temperament gained ground, with the dearth of genuine astrologers, Astrology started fading into oblivion.

The criticism and The defense

Astrology is scoffed at by people for two main reasons. First, of course, is that the predictions made by astrologers often goes wrong. Secondly, if one takes his horoscope to different astrologers, they make different predictions. They even make different horoscopes given the same set of data regarding the birth of a person. These facts force people conclude that Astrology is not a science and that it is only a means to befool people for the astrologers' benefit.

One cannot deny that the reasons cited above are valid. Nonetheless, there is some element of prejudice against Astrology which also plays some part in the denigration of this science. Let us take an example to illustrate this point.

A man falls sick due to some disease. He goes to his neighborhood doctor. The doctor advises him to go for some tests. After seeing the results of those tests and considering the patient's symptoms, the doctor concludes that the man has contracted some particular disease say, Sickosis :-). He prescribes some medicines and the patient goes home in the hope of getting rid of the sickness as soon as possible. After taking the medicines for next two days, the patient finds that the medicines are not working the way they were supposed to work. He goes back to the doctor and the doctor changes the medicines and the person starts responding to the second set of medication immediately. Within a few days, the person is back to his old healthy self.

What would have happened if the person had not responded to that second set of medicines? Most probably he would have gone to another doctor. That doctor would have advised him to go for more tests, diagnosed his problem as per his own knowledge and experience and treated him accordingly. Again, there would have been the same probability of the patient getting rid of his disease.

So, in the end it boils down to problem of correct diagnosis. As soon as the disease is identified correctly, it can be treated successfully. The doctor's problem is to identify the disease correctly, given the symptoms and the results of the tests conducted. In fact, he guesses the disease based on the symptoms the patient displays and to confirm his suspicions the doctor asks the patient to undergo a particular set of tests. If the doctor's first guess is proved wrong, he suggests another set of tests to the patient aimed at confirming his second best guess of the disease.

There is one more element which may mar the chances of the patient getting better: the test results. If the lab conducting those tests makes a mistake, the doctor is bound to be misled by the results. It has also been observed many a times that even with the same symptoms and the same set of test results, different doctors may diagnose the problem differently.

The same thing, when happening in the context of Astrology , is proffered as a proof that it is not a science. When a doctor makes a mistake, his skills are blamed not the Medical Science. But if an astrologer fails, it is Astrology which is considered a pseudo-science. If doctors can arrive at different conclusions on the basis of same data, why astrologers should not be allowed to differ with each other. If you take the blood samples of the same patient to different labs, you are almost certain to find differences in their findings. If the machines built with all our scientific knowledge at our disposal make mistakes, no one denigrates modern science itself. But when it comes to Astrology, people are only too ready to dismiss it. Perhaps, by doing this, people want to prove that they have, what is called, scientific temperament.

Why Astrologers go wrong in their prediction?

Lack of knowledge: This is perhaps the foremost reason. Most of the astrologers, after learning a bit, find it difficult to resist the temptation to start making predictions. A certain percentage of their predictions do turn out to be true since they have learnt a little bit of Astrology after all. They cannot hold themselves back from showing off their half baked knowledge. Another reason if the temptation to start reaping, as soon as possible, the fruits of their efforts made in learning the subject. Once the customers start flocking to them, they lose the urge to keep learning further. Also, they are left with little spare time to make further efforts to learn more. They get too busy duping people.

Lack of Talent: In the modern times, since the pursuit of this subject is not considered very respectable, persons of genius do not take up the study of Astrology. They would rather prefer to become scientists, engineers, doctors, litt?rateurs, artists etc. This does not help the development of Astrology nor does it help add to the knowledge or find the missing links in this subject. Currently, there are no serious research projects related to this field. Thus this base of knowledge does not get updated.

Incorrect Data: As the very basis of Astrology is mathematical, the data such as time of birth etc. must be accurate. If this data is incorrect, the horoscope and consequently the interpretation of it is bound to be faulty. The position of cusps, house divisions, and the planetary positions at any given moment needs to be accurate too. The numerous ephemeris differ from each other so much that it seems incredible. One must follow the most accurate data (for example, from NASA) for calculations, in this age of science. Normally, astrologers tend to take the easy route, that of following some ready-reckoner sort of things, leading to inaccuracies in their calculations.

Destiny of the subject: It may so happen that the fate of the person who wants his future read, does not favor the person in knowing his future. This idea may seem far fetched but it is not. Even in modern times, with all the development of medical science, patients keep dying of fully treatable diseases. If a person is destined to die of pneumonia, he will in spite of the fact that millions of people around the world are successfully treated for it every year. If fate can play a role here why cannot it play the same role regarding Astrology.

The very nature of Future: Modern science divides the universe in two parts: known and the unknown. It is believed that whatever is unknown today, will become known tomorrow. Over a period of time, every thing will become known one day. But the enlightened sages have said that certain aspects of the existence is unknowable. These things do not belong in the domain of human knowledge. Certain aspects of future also belongs to the same domain.

Anyone, who will study Astrology with an open mind, cannot dismiss it as something without merit. It is an easy task for astrologers to correctly tell certain things about a man, such as his physical characteristics, diseases he is likely to get afflicted with, his temperament, his overall success in life in terms of money he earns or fame he achieves, the nature of his profession etc., simply by looking at his correctly drawn horoscope. It is in the matters of details and the timing of events that astrologers tend to go awry. What is needed is a fresh approach to the subject. Brilliant minds should take it up for study, correct some anomalies and misconceptions which this science has acquired over the long past. Then only this subject can regain its rightful place as a serious and important branch of knowledge
